I'm sure someone says this every time it comes up, but I was born in '97 and I really don't identify as Gen Z.

More "educated" in name only.  A college degree has less value than ever before thanks to the gimme generation.

The idea that the most diverse, educated, urbanized, and queer generation in history was ever going to lean conservative was always ludicrous.

The sorry state of college education in this country. And I suppose the higher-than-ever GPA's are showing some sort of achievement!

GPA vs. ACT/SAT/standardized scores continue to largely deviate beyond expectations. Many, if not most, of those who lead their class in standardized scores are near the back of the pack on GPA. What does this prove? That the test of memorization and homework is completely different from actual, problem-solving, broad intelligence. ACT and SAT scores are now increasingly heightened by high memory, average intellect students. This is primarily due to the ACT preparatory books, classes, and tests that eliminate the purpose of such a standardized test.

The thing that always bothered me is how hard-line GOP'ers always had issues with "colleges" and our "professors." Almost as if they wanted our electorate to stay uneducated and ignorant.
What kind of party would favor keeping the citizens of this nation away from higher education and diversity?
Such a party is sad indeed.

I was born in '99 and I feel the same way.

I identify more as Late Gen Y/Millennial or a Gen Y/Z cusper.

Eh, I noticed a reverse pattern like this amongst those already in the upper echelon of high school achievers, later including within my own family, but I think any correlation is rather limited in reality if you analyze at the level of whatever Honors tier of students in a specific district. But this is useless speculation besides my point. (I hope) you will find college to be much simpler and basic than anything you learn in high school. It's a cakewalk and even the most challenging topics in an undergraduate program are mickey mouse courses compared to high school. Because you are paying them for your degree and no one places much value on hard knowledge. Anything less than an A- is considered a disgrace to anyone who looks at the transcript, and that's the mindset I go in when evaluating students. And profs know this and students know this, and somewhere in this symbiotic relationship, there may be some begging. Either way, there is a vicious cycle of inflation without learning. The other cause of the non-learning is certain underprepared students bringing the median student that has to be taught to downward across a larger swath of institutions than some will admit.

And without naming institutions, there are a great number of universities in this country that are not worth more than a high school education. It's not like Princeton's opening its doors to more American youth.

That's exactly it. They fear that if people learn what the Gilded Age was like, they'll vote for socialists. They fear that if people learn what Vietnam was like, they'll vote for anti-war candidates.

Oddly enough, I was born in 1998 and I do identify mostly as Gen Z to the extent that those generations are applicable here Tongue (though obviously a borderline case)

100% this. Speaking as an academic, our education system is rotten from the top to the bottom. The students I teach are dumber and dumber every year, but the department mandates a maximum fail rate and takes student evaluations super seriously, so there's nothing that can be done.

The problem starts long before the university level, though.

Y'all do realize that being nonwhite and college educated doesn't mean they'll become Democrats, right? None of those things alone suggest they wouldn't be conservative.

LOL, my mom works in academia and is ironically a Republican like yourself (though, judging by your PM score and posting history, quite a different kind of GOPer), and I think she would endorse this assessment 110%. Smiley

Speaking as an academic, it really depends on the institution at which you're looking. There are far too many institutions that don't hold the high standards that are expected of academic inquiry and preparation.

I do agree, to an extent, that the undergraduate degree is not worth as much now as it was before, not because of the "gimme generation" (a stupid concept that can be addressed in another conversation entirely), but rather because there is an increasing number of degree holders (and most of these from subpar institutions), which saturates the market. Positive and consistent extracurricular and on-the-job experience are more important to set yourself apart alongside your degree.

I went for a complete graduate education, as my primary goal was to maximize my learning potential and improve myself (I will also be the first member of my family to earn a PhD).

Hate to sound Peak RINO Tom (before anyone accuses me of anything, I completely acknowledge the significant trend away from the GOP by many White college grads, specifically women, and I acknowledge much of this is former GOP voters leaving for the Democrats), but this needs to be considered a LITTLE bit more when doing exit poll analysis.  Having a college degree in 1980 is more comparable to making $100k+ than it is to having a college degree today, if we're being honest.  Each generation is more and more educated (if we're using having a degree as that benchmark), and it's going to continue to redefine what having a college degree really *means*.  It's not anywhere near the exclusive club it used to be, and that needs to be considered.  Republicans going from 60% to 55% with White college grads over 45, for example, is enough of a shift that COMBINED with more younger people (who of course are more likely to have college degrees) voting each year, it's going to look like on paper a straight shift to Democrats, but there are lurking variables.

You're right, race and education aren't predictors of political affiliation in the US.
