There are several congresspeople that I think would be ample (or even arguably superior) replacements for Pelosi: Cedric Richmond and Ben Ray Lujan would be strong options, for instance. But Tim Ryan is sure as hell not one of those congresspeople, and it's tragic to see so many progressives ally themselves with Ryan (who is ultimately more conservative than Pelosi) just because of their anti-establishment vendettas.

At the end of the day, though, I do think that the next two years will require a Democratic leader who is deeply experienced, and obviously no one fits that bill better than Pelosi. I guess I don't see why everyone is so certain that she will spinelessly settle for excessive compromise with Republicans.

Why are Dems so interested in holding on to fossils in leadership? The GOP is always willing to innovate. We don't see Newt Gingrich being the House minority leader, do we?

Ryan is 30 years younger and he was pretty useless during his speakership

It is the height of hypocrisy for Pelosi's opponents to blame her for losses then not credit her for wins. Sure, make the argument that the leadership needs fresh blood and new ideas or whatever, but the disingenuousness of their earlier cries post Ossoff is striking. Back then the argument was "Muh Pelosi ads will destroy us just like they destroyed Ossoff unless we dump her!1!!!"

By doing the exact same thing to them they're doing to her?

Never was much of a fan of Pelosi, but she sure is a fighter. We need that in the 116th Congress, maybe not as Speaker, though.

I think that a John Lewis speakership would be a good compromise between the Barbra Lee and Pelosi Camps but at the moment I support Pelosi over this terribly attempted Tim Ryan Coup with Fudge at the head I think Pelosi would make a great speaker but she should get replaced eventually

Does Pelosi have the political capital to go against other Democrats? Like is she going to get Sutton or Horrigan to run against Ryan?

The more I hear from the Pelosi haters, the more I support Pelosi.

Hope she mercilessly crushes the rabble and punishes them for their insolence.

She seems to be showing more contempt for people in her own party than...I dunno, Republicans?

That's because currently she allows the latter to mourn and bury their dead.

What happens if the person the revolt puts up to replace Pelosi gets blocked on the floor by Pelosi allies (assuming we get to that point, which we likely won't)? Do we just keep going in circles?

Same. I am not particularly attached to Pelosi, but she is skilled and experienced, and the idea that "something else, anything else, with no plan or explanation whatsoever as to what that other thing is" is preferable is not very persuasive. It would be easier to be open to the alternative if there were, you know, actually some sort of viable alternative. But it seems that all the alternative consists of is Tim Ryan and Seth Moulton whining.

They repeat the roll call vote over and over again until someone hits a majority.

Some have been suggesting Pelosi could defuse this by offering up some sort of eventual succession plan. Although it has seemed that way for the past 15 years, she can't be Democratic House Leader forever. Even Harry Reid had to eventually call it a day. She'll win this Speakership, but she really should have some public plan in place for the Caucus and Democrats in general for when and how she'll eventually step down. Maybe that's too rational for the people in charge of the revolt, but it could appease those on the fence like some unnamed House members who have been quoted.

I'm no fan of Pelosi, but the moderate trash trying to replace her needs to be punished.

Sounds like she'd get most of the CBC, but Cedric Richmond would support Fudge and members like Emmanuel Cleaver and Gwen Moore sound on the fence (although I think Moore would support Pelosi in the end): https://www.politico.com/story/2018/11/15/black-caucus-pelosi-speaker-994469

This stinks of similar republican threats- where a small minority of members who love their own voices talk up a big game to politico, but then fold for some tiny demand, and prove how weak (and small there numbers are)

It's a rather simple question- would Marcia Fudge be a more effective speaker than Nancy Pelosi? The obvious answer is no.
