Essentially, Davidson County (Nashville) is divided into three districts in the State Senate.  Two are overwhelmingly Democrat (one being more white Democrat and the other heavily minority), while the third (the 20th District) is traditionally strongly Republican.

This district includes most of the wealthier areas of Davidson County as well as some of the more rural (using that word loosely) areas within the scope of Metropolitan Nashville Government.  The incumbent, Steve Dickerson, was not up for re-election in 2018 and has been seen as a good fit for the district.  He did fight back a primary challenge from his right by a margin of 60-40 in 2016.  Some election results:

2016: 56-44 Dickerson
2012: 54-46 Dickerson
2016-PRES: Clinton +0.2
2012-PRES: Romney +14
Cook PVI: R+5 (would be R+1 only using 2016)

Also, it's noteworthy that TN HD 56, which includes the same wealthier areas of Nashville (but not the "rural" areas) and was also Romney-Clinton (Romney +23, Clinton +0.4) flipped 51-49 in 2018.  Though, the difference is that the incumbent retired to run unsuccessfully for governor, while Dickerson probably will run in 2020.

TN-SD 31 is a similar demographic district in Memphis (although it is Romney +20, Trump +5) and saw its incumbent, Brian Kelsey, only hold on by 2 points in 2018 after being unopposed four years prior.
