No, it shows Republicans vote based off identity politics, white grievance, social issues, etc. not "#populism Purple heart" or "economic issues" or whatever. And there's nothing Democrats can do to change that, short of throwing their entire base under the bus.

No, it shows Republicans vote based off identity politics, white grievance, social issues, etc. not "#populism Purple heart" or "economic leftism" or whatever. And there's nothing Democrats can do to change that, short of throwing their entire base under the bus.
Not having the Senate during a wave year and losing the electoral college even while winning the PV means that the base they're chasing can't get them the position they need to be enacting the change they want happening. How can Dems defend against right-to-work, raise the minimum wage, or expand Medicaid if they keep losing where it counts?   Optics are everything.

The cognitive dissonance is crazy. Then again, you do have a lot of working-class Republicans who are right-wing across the board. Take for instance my boomer evangelical uncle. I talk about him once in awhile because to me he is the archetypal Republican. He is living on a fixed income and attacks "free college" and Medicare for All. He also said no Christian can vote for a pro-choice candidate... and turned around and voted for Republican Knute Buehler, whose entire campaign was based on protecting abortion rights! I love my uncle- outside of politics he's one of the most generous people you'll ever meet- but he's brainwashed. And there are millions of NPCs across the country who think just like him.

I mean look where optics got Bredesen and Donnelly (and almost Manchin)

To put a more positive spin on things, this means progressives can accomplish many of their legislative goals without controlling the legislatures.
