Severed Fingers

I got a phone call on Friday saying that one of our contractors severed two fingers whilst operating on a remote area drill rig.

We got him evacuated back to Perth within 6 hours 4WD's using the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Just a reminder to be very careful putting your hands and fingers in:

(i) pinch points;
(ii) closing spaces;
(iii) places where they can be struck;
(iv) Using tools (knives) with sharp edges;
(v) Moving your fingers in a repetitive motion towards sharp instruments (meat slicers).

The incident occured when a drill rod was lowered onto another cylindrical drill rod by mechanical force and the fingers seperated inside the glove.

Small closing gap between two metal cylinders and 2 seconds later...we have a young 20 yo guy with the top of his left index and middle fingers severed.

You dont get a second chance with fingers.

The guy is out of hospital in Perth.

Finger tips including first knuckle and nail could not be saved.

Will have to get prosthetic tips installed.

Remarkable how quickly this injury occured despite wearing safety gloves.
