Even if we suppose that the ARD exit poll is the best predictor of the ultimate outcome, these results ought to humiliate and shame the CDU - a 7 percentage point swing against them after an already abysmal result in 2017?

If we saw these results in early 2021, I think almost everyone here would be shocked at the CDU being pulverized like this. It surprises me that anyone took polls showing them on 20% seriously - was never very plausible! The CDU being at 25% is shocking enough...

Getting ahead of myself but I assume even if the CDU have 1 more seat than the SDP they’ll get the first stab at a coalition? And will on the balance be likely to get one?

Reminds me of 2005 when a ruling party that has been around for a while (in that case SPD)  and was expected to be soundly beaten comes back and beat the pre-election polls into a virtual tie its main opponent.

until what July the CDU were clear favourites though?

Maybe save that take until we have some actual numbers.

Anyway, even on the ARD figures this is the worst ever result for the CDU-CSU and will mean a significant loss of seats. A milder catastrophe than perhaps expected is still a catastrophe! A lot of you are talking utter nonsense right now.

The last two months have made people forget that the SDP were written off for dead and expected to come third as late as this summer.

With Merkel at the top of the list, yes. But everyone expected the CDU to weaken with Laschet as leader. Remember the Greens were polling better than CDU for a while.

CDU/CSU should go into opposition.  The next election could be even worse for them if they continue being in government.

Save your hot takes until we have some results yes? With mail ballots expected to amount to half of the votes cast exit polls this year can be faulty.

Do exit polls take into account mail voting? If not, who would benefit?

Note: I am not pleased with these results of course, hoping the numbers end up tilting towards the SPD

I think it's a little to early for the "I lived B**ch" meme posts I feel.

Disappointing that the SPD aren't clearly winning, but they are potentially in contention for winning and government. So leave the self-righteous takes for now.
