This is a really, really, really bad idea. Several years ago, when I was president of the Constitutional Convention, a pocket of rogue legislators spammed the queue with frivolous amendments that varied from each other only minutely, in an effort to hold the majority hostage by preventing any progress until their demands had been met. Without provisions similar to those the honorable member proposes to abolish, we would have been powerless to oppose these efforts and this country literally would not exist.
Empowering the speaker to disregard spam and deliberate attempts at obstruction (in addition to plain nonsense) is essential to maintain the integrity of this chamber, and I implore the members to heed the first minister's advice and defeat this resolution.
