Prediction: Nixon wins in a landslide.

Do you intend to cover his presidency from 1961 onward?

Yep. There will be many twists and turns if he wins. What's your prediction map?

The State of Arkansas has just closed it's polls and we can make a projection.

I like this timeline.

Just wondering, why aren't New York polls close yet if Pennsylvania is already called?

Pennsylvania's close at 8 PM in the East while NY's close at 9 PM in the East, as detailed by this map:

Thanks for liking this TL. What's your favorite part about it so far?

Quick EDIT: Also, the Campaign Trail, which was what I used, had the same poll closing times as 2016 for Each State in the 1960 Game

Kennedy

"Thank you! I want to thank every single one of you that is right here. Thank you for being with me through this rough, rough campaign. I just sent a wire to President Elect-Nixon saying "Vice President Richard Nixon, Los Angeles, California. I want to repeat through this wire the congratulations and best wishes I extended to you on television last night. I know that you will have united support of all Americans as you lead the nation in the cause of peace and freedom during the next four years." May I say in addition to all citizens of this country, Democrats, independents, Republicans, regardless of how they may have voted, that it is a humbling moment to me and I want to express my thanks to all of them for their support personally. I particularly want to thank all of those who worked so long and so hard in this campaign on our behalf and who were generous to me in my visits throughout the country and who were generous enough to support me in the election on yesterday. To all Americans I say that the next four years are going to be difficult and challenging years for all of us, not just President-Elect Nixon. I may have been crushed in this election, but I think that there is general agreement by all of our citizens that a supreme national effort will be needed in the years ahead to move this country safely through the 1960s. I ask for your help in supporting our President's  effort and I can assure you that every degree of mind and spirit that I possess will be devoted to the long-range interests of the United States and to the cause of freedom around the world by working with out new administration while in the Senate. So now my wife and I prepare to return to the Senate and for a new baby. Thank you."

Nixon

"Ladies and Gentlemen, I have received this wire from Senator Kennedy "Vice President Richard Nixon, Los Angeles, California,  I want to repeat through this wire the congratulations and best wishes I extended to you on television last night. I know that you will have united support of all Americans as you lead the nation in the cause of peace and freedom during the next four years" and I replied to the Senator...I sent him the following wire: "Senator John F. Kennedy, Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. our sincere good wishes are gratefully accepted. You are to be congratulated on a fine race. I know that the nation can continue to count on your unending energy as you re-enter the Senate, and that you and I can maintain our long-standing cordial relations in the years ahead. Sincerely, Richard Nixon."

I received also a wire from President Eisenhower which says, "My congratulations to you for the victory you have just won at the polls. I will be sending you promptly a more comprehensive telegram suggesting certain measures that may commend themselves to you as you prepare to take over next January the responsibilities of the Presidency. Signed, Dwight D. Eisenhower." And I have sent to President Eisenhower the following wire: "I am grateful for your wire and good wishes. I look forward to working with you in the near future. The whole country is hopeful that your long experience in the service of your country can be drawn upon further in the years to come as I enter with new ideas and new ways to continue the policies you started. With every good wish, signed, Richard Nixon."

I want to say this: No matter you are White or Black, Christian or Jew, Democrat or Republican, I am here to be President for you and no one else. I hope that the next four years are prosperous and you hopefully graciously accept me as your new President, I hope I can serve you well. I am honored to have won tonight and I am honored to serve all of you. Thank you.

10 PM EST

It's 10 PM in the East and the polls have closed in the States of Idaho, Iowa, Montana, Nevada, and Utah. We have projections from all of these states.

Idaho

President-Election Nixon wins the State of Idaho and it's 4 Electoral Votes. For Senate, Henry Dworshak wins.

Richard Nixon/Barry Goldwater: 55.42% (159,899)
John F. Kennedy/Stuart Symington: 44.58% (128,631)

Senate

Henry Dworshak: 56.2%
R. F. Bob McLaughlin: 43.8%

Iowa

President-Elect Nixon wins the State of Iowa and 6 Electoral Votes. For Governor, Norman A. Erbe wins. For Senate, Jack Miller wins.

Richard Nixon/Barry Goldwater: 57.88% (740,675)
John F. Kennedy/Stuart Symington: 42.12% (539,080)

Governor

Norman A. Erbe: 59.1%
Edward J. McManus: 40.9%

Senate

Jack Miller: 54.3%
Hershel C. Loveless: 45.7%

Montana

President-Elect Nixon wins Montana's 4 Electoral Votes. For Governor, Donald Grant Nutter wins. For Senate, Orvin B. Fjare wins

Richard Nixon/Barry Goldwater: 52.59% (143,874)
John F. Kennedy/Stuart Symington: 47.41% (129,727)

Governor

Donald Grant Nutter: 57.9%
Paul Cannon: 42.1%

Senate

Orvin B. Fjare: 52.97%
Lee Metcalf: 47.03%

Nevada

The President-Elect easily wins the State of Nevada and it's 3 Electoral Votes.

Richard Nixon/Barry Goldwater: 51.56% (53,449)
John F. Kennedy/Stuart Symington: 48.44% (50,212)

Utah

The President-Elect also takes Utah and it's 4 Electoral Votes. Nixon now stands at 303 while Senator Kennedy is at 175. For Governor, George Dewey Clyde wins.

John F. Kennedy/Stuart Symington: 43.92% (157,323)

William Arthur Barlocker: 39.6%

It's looking like a real landslide here and from the look of it, the Democrats are probably cursing Kennedy right now. They've lost 13 Seats already while the Republicans have not lost a single one. That puts the Republicans at 47 while the Democrats would be at 53 if the night ended with the remaining two incumbents holding their seats, but it looks like they might be up for grabs as well.

Richard Nixon/Barry Goldwater: 303
John F. Kennedy/Stuart Symington: 175
Harry Byrd/Strom Thurmond: 6

11 PM EST

It's 11 PM in the east and Nixon's home state of California, as well as Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington have closed their polls. We have projections for all four.

California

The President-Elect wins his home state and it's prize of 32 Electoral Votes, as was expected of him.

Richard Nixon/Barry Goldwater: 51.46% (3,448,898)
John F. Kennedy/Stuart Symington: 48.54% (3,253,413)

Hawaii

Nixon wins the following 3 Electoral Votes from Hawaii.

Richard Nixon/Barry Goldwater: 52.17% (95,650)
John F. Kennedy/Stuart Symington: 47.83% (87,691)

Oregon

Nixon carries Oregon's 6 Electoral Votes. For Senate, Elmo Smith wins.

Richard Nixon/Barry Goldwater: 52.53% (405,285)
John F. Kennedy/Stuart Symington: 47.47% (366,259)

Senate

Elmo Smith: 53.9%
Maurine Neuberger: 46.1%

Washington

The President-Elect grabs Washington, placing him at 353 Electoral Votes. For Governor, Lloyd J. Andrews wins.

Richard Nixon/Barry Goldwater: 52.95% (633,774)
John F. Kennedy/Stuart Symington: 47.05% (563,112)

Governor

Lloyd J. Andrews: 57.8%
Albert Rosellini: 42.2%

With that, the Republicans have consolidated control of the Governor's Mansions int e country, with 29 for the Republicans and 21 for the Democrats. The current Senate composition is 48 Republicans to 51 Democrats and it really goes down to who wins the race in Alaska. Meanwhile, if we look at he Presidential Map, this is a landslide. There is no other way to describe it. Nixon is halfway to 400 and Kennedy has not gotten out of the 170s! The Massachusetts Senator has been given a taste of reality and the new President-Elect has proven that you can't beat the Vice President to a popular President.

Richard Nixon/Barry Goldwater: 353
John F. Kennedy/Stuart Symington: 175
Harry Byrd/Strom Thurmond: 6

and Republicans defacto have the senate as well, as many Democrats then were conservatives .

Can you post the senate map though(and show the GOP gains in light blue)

Many Conservative Democrats were in the South however

I shall in a few seconds. I just need to remember the Gains and write them down to turn light blue

Btw, what do you think so far?

Depends on the issues , on economic and foreign policy issues they will get the support of the Southern Democrats while on Civil Rights issues they will get the support of Northern Democrats. So they really do have a defacto trifecta.

Pretty good so far

Nixon's Transition

November 9th, 1960

Following Vice President Richard Nixon's swift victory yesterday, garnering 356 Electoral Votes and 50.9% of the popular vote, it was time for the world to react to another 4 years of Republican control of the White House. Most messages were congratulatory in nature; and despite the Nixon victory being expected due to him being the Vice President and always having a lead in the Electoral College, the DOW Jones fell a few points before rising slightly back.

In the United States, Senator Kennedy went back to the Senate as Vice President and President-Elect Nixon began to create a transition team to get him and his future cabinet ready for the Presidency. The President-Elect has seen an approval rating of 54% before taking office as his own man.

Nixon and Eisenhower meet for Transition Talk

November 10th, 1960

In a White House Meeting Today, President Dwight Eisenhower and his former Vice President and current President-Elect Richard Nixon meet to discuss the presidential transition between the two men. The almost hour long meeting between the two men has been described as very friendly and positive due to the close friendship between the two and during it, President Eisenhower promised to Nixon that he would do his very best to have a successful transition of power.

Democratic Party damaged as memories of 1920s Emerge

December 2nd, 1960

Following its defeat not only on the Presidential level, but also in the House and Governorships last month with the Republicans retaking control of both Government levels, the Democratic Party is in its worst situation politically since the 1920's. The party also lost seats in the local races, through state legislature seats; and is almost completely out of power at the start of the Nixon era, with the President-Elect having an enviable amount of power for his presidency. The only Government position where they have some level of control is in the Senate and even there, it hangs by a thread as the loss of Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson shows. As House Minority Leader Sam Rayburn takes his position bitterly, a question emerges: How can the Democrats come back from this defeat?

The Nixon Administration

Richard Nixon inaugurated as the 35th President of the United States

January 20th, 1961

In a ceremony in Washington D.C. Today, Richard Milhouse Nixon was inaugurated as the 35th President of the United States and Senator Barry Morris Goldwater was inaugurated as the 37th Vice President of the United States. It is estimated that anywhere between 1,025,000-1,193,000 attended the inauguration. In his inaugural address, Nixon stated that "The silent majority who want an end to Government excess will see what they want. The people of America will no longer have the Government interfere in their private lives nor will it intervene in their private businesses" and that a New Conservative Era has begun in the United States

President Nixon to hold a Meetwing with Diplomat George F. Keenan, Secretary of State Henry Cabot Lodge Jr, and Secretary of Defense Margaret Chase Smith

February 9th, 1961

Today, the President has announced to hosting a meeting with Diplomat George F. Keenan, Secretary of State Henry Cabot Lodge Jr, and Secretary of Defense Margaret Chase Smith, though it is unknown what the major topic will be, some have speculated it will be on Cuba.

Conversation between George Keenan, Secretary of Defense Smith, Secretary of State Lodge, and President Nixon

February 9th, 1961

Nixon: "Alright, George...Margaret...Henry, on Vietnam, I want to know your opinions about it. What you three think...I want to hear all sides here. I want to go ahead and say it here now, that I never want either of you to tell me just what I want to hear. You're here to advise me, not appease me."

Keenan: "Mr. President, you have many options on the table. Now, Diem is losing support from his own men…he's had an assassination attempt every week it seems...We sent advisors over there when Ike was President, as you already know. And from a removed point of view, the United States, meaning you, have two broad options. Option 1 is to go in Head First and sending troops to Vietnam and the other Option is to simply stay out of it. If you ask for my opinion on the matter, Mr. President, I think Option 2 is more preferable to Option 1."

Nixon: "If Diem falls...We could see Communism take over, which wouldn't help our case in the orient."

Smith: "Exactly."

Lodge: "You simply can't give up Vietnam. Not when everything is at stake."

Keenan: "Christ, you two are hawks. Now Mr. President, if you want me to be brutally honest, Vietnam, outside of a few cities like Saigon, is nothing special. Just huts and farms as far as the eye can see...Most people really don't care who leads them and who doesn't lead them simply because it has no effect on them existing. Vietnam is little incentive for other nations to decide their path based on what happened in some unknown, thin, pointless nation and whoever has interest in it, it's not the United States...Only Embarrassment will be the result in Vietnam."

Nixon: "So you want us to leave them out to be conquered? We have to fight Khrushchev politically unless we want to nuke the whole damn planet and allowing them a victory, even in a country seemingly as pointless as Vietnam, it won't help us, it'll hurt us and our credibility to be the defenders of the free world. I can't let that happen, George."

Keenan: "That's why I have a third option as well, Mr. President. We cap off our military presence there and we only send a few hundred advisers. But, we also constantly supply, arm, and Politically back South Vietnam. We send them our armor, our rifles, and whatever else we can send. We endorse their battle for freedom publicly in the United Nations and other diplomatic channels and we don't dip the rest of our foot in the pool. By doing this, it looks like we are giving them maximum support, while we won't be risking American men. It might even keep us popular with the country and Public Opinion., something we can't find if we ever committed to a short war but followed by a brutally long occupation and policing role. If that happens, Mr. President, Casualties could rise into the tens of thousands."

Nixon: "Truman lost his legacy the moment we lost Korea, George. We lost that peninsula because we were blinded by the victory we had only 6 years prior and didn't see it coming. We didn't see Mao coming. I could lose both Vietnam and my Legacy if we are blinded by the defeat we had 8 years ago."

Keenan: "If the South Vietnamese truly want Democracy, they will die for it like how Americans died in the Revolution. If we give them weaponry, they can provide manpower. But, if you want my honest opinion, I say we keep our military manpower out of Vietnam. There's simply to much at risk here."

Smith: "You'd rather see a country fall to the oppressive block of Communism and allow Country after Country to fall to it? Because with non-intervention, that's exactly what will happen."

Lodge: "I agree with Smith. I say we go in there and commit to this for the long run. We can soften North Vietnam up with several bombing runs before we launch an invasion. We secure the South's freedom at gunpoint. We make an example of the North, to sure the Soviets what happens the next time them and their allies try this pathetic guerilla style war."

Keenan: "Should we really commit to such an idea? That would put so many countless live in the crossfire for no benefit at all whatsoever is just plain stupid to be even considered."

Lodge: "It's the military, men die."

*Nixon sighs*

Nixon: "No...no. George has a fair point. I want to thank all three of you. George, I'm going to do what you suggested but if the South hasn't won by 1963, I'm deploying forces to aid the South."

Keenan: "Noted, Mr. President."

Nixon: "Alright. All three of you can leave now."

*Recording Ends*

President Nixon makes Statement on Vietnam

February 13th, 1961

Following his meeting with the secretaries of State and defense and the US Diplomat, President Nixon has announced that the United States will begin selling tens of millions worth of War Materials to the war effort from the South Vietnamese and that the around 900 Military Advisers in Vietnam would be re-organized to further help train the South's military forces for the next decade. The US Advisory force will also have an additional 1,000 men added in non-combative roles. He finished, stating that the United States shall support South Vietnam in any of their endeavors and the US would condemn any kind of foreign actions in support of the North Vietnamese. The impact of this announcement is unknown though it could have lasting ripple effects for the small Oriental country for decades to come.

So, who do you think won the argument? Do you agree with Kennan? Or do you agree with Lodge and Smith? Did Nixon make the right call or will this end in a quicker defeat of South Vietnam in your opinion? Tell me what you think because I'm interested in hearing what you have to say on it.

President Nixon to host Ball for all United States Senators, Representatives, and Cabinet members as well as reporters

April 17th, 1961

Tonight, President Nixon has announced that a Presidential Ball will be held in the White House Courtyard and has invited several prominent US Senators, Governors, Representatives, and Media Outlets to the Ball as well as his Cabinet just to have good fun.

Scene from the Academy Award Winning TV Series "Nixon" (1995) Episode 2: Cleaning up Mistakes

Scene opens up

Kennedy: *chuckles* "Dick, we may have been opponents during 1960 but I really do appreciate our friendship. Also, I think you've done an amazing job and you've only been President for four months!"

Nixon: "Thanks Jack...and congratulations on the new son."

Kennedy: "Ah, so you've heard about that, eh? Thanks for the congratulations."

Smith: "Mr. President, you're needed in the Situation room."

Nixon: "Alright. Tell Jacqueline I said hi."

Kennedy: "Will do."

Nixon follows Smith to the Situation Room and makes so no one followed him before shutting the door

Nixon: "What's the situation?"

Lodge: "The forces at Isla de Pinos have suffered a major setback, Mr. President."

Nixon: "What setback?"

Smith: "We're still getting information"

Nixon: "Christ you two! Just tell me what the hell is going on! Just tell me what happened!"

Goldwater: "The forces were fighting inside of the prison, and the Cubans...They've massacred the whole prison and they've killed several of our men with it."

Nixon: "Massacred?! How the hell did the Cubans just Massacre the prison?!"

Smith: "From the information we're receiving, They rigged the entire prison complex to blow, most likely from underground."

Nixon: "Son of a [redacted]...How did we not know they were there?! Did someone in your offices have their [yahoo!] heads up their [stop plis]?! Did they even bother to look at the [send help] reports?! We all know they couldn't have kept something like that a secret over there if they did!"

Lodge: "Sir, we still have a relatively large force on the island and a sizable foothold...but...it's unlikely to see any advancement. Trinidad is-"

Nixon: "Stop. Give me a minute to think. Do they need reinforcements?"

Goldwater: "From what they've told me and from what I've heard, no."

Smith: "What's happened on Trinidad probably won't give the Cubans to mobilize the necessary forces at a place like Trinidad before the Landings happen."

Nixon: *sighs deeply as he takes a seat* "We just sent a lot of good men to their deaths because of this poor planning. Tell the son of a [Nixon curses a lot, doesn't he?] who signed off on this that he can expect a deployment of the Mojave or another god awful place."

Lodge: "Understood, Mr. President. We'll get those [redacted] soon enough."

Nixon: "I sure hope so...give me an update within twenty minutes. I just need some time to-"

Smith: "Hold it, Mr. President. A new update has just emerged...Fidel has been killed!"

Fidel Castro Dead; Anti-Communist forces Invade Cuba!

On the Morning of April 18th, 1961, we have just learned that Anti-Communist Forces have invaded the Island of Trinidad and have captured much of the Island and has begun making inroads to Cuba itself. Also in the News is the death of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, who died on the front lines, leading his men. Almost immediately replacements have been brought up and the two struggling for control the most are Che Gueverra and Fidel's brother, Raul Castro. Meanwhile, President Nixon has stated that the US has had no involvement in the Invasion but states that the United States will support the rebels in their attempt to overthrow the Communist regime and threatens the Soviets with reprisal if they try to intervene. Whether US Involvement has actually happened is unclear, but the News in Cuba will likely be a focal point of attention for many in Florida.
