you can be both, maybe they were, but anybody that murders random civilians for a political goal is a terrorist, no ifs ands or buts.  They might be "FF" to themselves and the group they are working for, but they're still murderous c**nt burgers to the rest of us and they should be shot on sight.

The IRA objectively prolonged the conflict by pursuing a quixotic military strategy for a political goal (unification) which was never going to be achievable. All they did was kill hundreds of people before acquiescing to something the British government had more or less offered in 73.
