It was a brutally hot day in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. A young aide scurried into the office of Senator Mellie Harris. In his hurry, he dropped a stack of papers all over the floor of the elegantly furnished room,

"Just leave it." The Senator said without looking up, a hint of exasperation in her voice.

The aide looked bewildered but then stepped into the staff bullpen. What Senator Harris saw in the file folder in front of her rattled the normally calm, composed politician. She read it several times, just to be sure. She started to think over all her interactions with President Alex Haley to try to remember if there was any indication of what she had just learned. She had to process this alone. She pulled her coat off the hanger, threw it over her shoulders and left. The pile of disheveled papers sat there as Mellie Harris turned the lights off and walked out of the office, holding back her emotions.

A storm was brewing, and Alex Haley was going to be carried by the winds.

Will Hardin


DNC Headquarters was in chaos. They needed to get in front of the story, they just didn't know how. This could kill them. The party's executive director, Will Hardin, was barking orders,

"How soon until we can get the chairwoman on cable news?"

"Somebody schedule a press conference."

"Let's find some doctors to put on stage for our press conference."

"We need to stand with Haley. We can't look like traitors to our president."

In the background, a staffer yelled, "Senator, you cannot do this!"

The Democrats had a problem. A rogue senator could make all of their efforts futile.

Happening Now: Sen. Bill Louis (D-NM) Holds Press Conference
December 4th, 1997



“Hello, and thank you for coming. Tonight I have some painful and disturbing news to share with you. *Clears throat* President Alex Haley has entered what his doctors believe is the end stage of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Unfortunately, the new treatments that have recently become available came too late. I know I will be roundly criticized by my party for the decision I have made to take this information to the public. While I wish it had not come to this, there is no way I could have stood back and allowed any president, regardless of party, to mislead the American people. We deserve a leader who will be transparent and honest. President Haley is not that leader. This news is tragic and personally distressing. That said, my feelings must come second to a belief that we need a strong functioning, open democracy. I have chosen to put patriotism ahead of partisanship. I am officially calling on President Haley to resign his office. We the people of the United States must reckon with this national emotional conflict. Our love and respect for President Haley will clash with our love and respect of strong institutions and of the political process. It breaks my heart, not just that I’m standing here today, but that I was the only elected official with the willingness to stand up and speak the truth. We as Americans will process this in our own individual ways, I am beginning that process now. Thank you, I won’t be taking questions.”



Goddamn, that was miserable. I’m probably gonna regret that. Right thing or not, it probably cost me my career. That opportunist Castro or that weasel Calliso will probably primary me. I’m DOA. Maybe I should just resign.
