Gorbachev because (whether he intended to or not) he played into Reagan's winning the Cold War.

I’m taking into account best for the ideological fitting: Kruschev or Lenin. Kruschev led through pacing of political repression while having a booming economy while Lenin brought the USSR into modernization by enacting reforms to not discriminate based on class, ethnicity, or gender. Kruschev didn’t stab his fellow revolutionaries in the back though so he has a gain personally.
Gorby did try to open the state up and bring in new ideas, not his fault Yeltsin and his cronies failed the people.

Lenin, Krushchev and Gorbachov.

Lenin is a freedom fighter, and the early USSR (first 5 years) is something i perceive as something good, but it quickly became a worse country, and when Stalin took over, the USSR was basically lost in what could become a very dark age for Russia. Under Lenin, the USSR legalized abortion, improved education (bringing it from an agricultural peasant's country with almost no literacy to a country that would sent the first human into space), and realizing it's industrial power. I believed most had good intentions, but when we look back, we must conclude that Russia wasn't ready for communism yet, and should have transitioned into a democratic republic, creating a democratic foundation. Even in 2018, Russia still doesn't have a true democratic tradition, as it is slowly reverting into authoritarianism once again (with opposition parties even advocating more authoritarianism), or being fake opposition.

Khruschev was arguably the most capable leader the USSR had, had at least a moral consciousness, revealing the crimes under the Stalin regime, the economy boomed, and relations with the USA improved a bit (but were still very hostile). He can also be remembered for it's space program he did set up.

Gorbachov tried what he had to do, but transforming the USSR was already a lost cause. I still respect Gorbachov, and i honestly think if the USSR didn't cease to exist, it would be a much better country to live in, than Putin's Russia (though, it could be even much worse, because i can imagine Russia is a breeding ground for extremist ideologies, and Putin's authoritarianism is still preferrable over fascism, stalinism or even a different authoritarian, and Putin is a capable leader).

Agree. Though early (only early, until something like 1973) years of Brezhnev rule were not so bad too from the point of view of "ordinary soviet citizen".....

Well, Gorbachev was very "pro-western", so, you can't realistically call HIM "cancer". And, BTW, how must ordinary russian citizen call US authorities under your logic?Huh Probably - no less, then the above mentioned "cancer". Or - would Americans prefer "AIDS"?
