Do the Pubs really have any chance of taking down James Mathias? Who's their candidate? Seems like 2018 just isn't the year.

There's a very strong chance Mathias will lose. Mary Beth Carozza is a stronger candidate than 4 years ago and she represents Mathias' home base of Ocean City in the House of Delegates. Trump and Hogan are exceedingly popular in that area, and it's the one part of the state where Republicans beat Dems in EV turnout. At best for Mathias its a toss up.
So, it was a mixed result, but not totally surprising. Republicans gain districts 38 and 42, but it appears that Gail Bates has lost in district 9. Looks like Republicans will also hold district 34, but it's a razor-thin margin.

Yes, good call on district 9. I figured Gail could win by a solid 5% margin. Overall I thought voters would be kinder to Republicans for legislative races since they are linked to Hogan while voting Democrat for federal office. Oh well.

What's the status of the supermajority.  Veto override is 60% in Maryland.  Do Dems still have it?  And in the lower house?

Both chambers still have Dem supermajorities. Republicans only netted 1 seat in the senate, and Democrats netted 6 seats in the House of Delegates.

Republicans would need to net 4 seats in the senate in 2022 to break the supermajority, but who knows what kind of year that'll be. Although, the Maryland Republican bench was pretty wiped out on Tuesday night, and with the Trumpification of the Republican Party, who knows if Republican will nominate an electable candidate for governor then?
