This gives red state Democrats an easy out. If Kavanaugh is confirmed with this information out there the Senate is gone for Republicans. His confirmation isn't going to stop more details from being released and if that happens it's an electoral nightmare. It isn't 1991 anymore.

Yep, no reason for any Dems to vote for Kavanaugh now, unless/until this is cleared up. Not voting for Kavanaugh now won't even hurt Heitkamp.

And then there is the question of Collins/Murkowski. Can Murkowski stomach supporting Kavanaugh with this in the air? And can Collins' political future stomach it?

I mean, none of this matters, Republicans will happily vote for him even if the claim can be substantiated, but what a bizarre and unbelievable defense Grassley prepared for this. Kavanugh is 53-years-old and went to an all boys' school. There is zero chance he can name 65 women he remembers from the time he was a teenager.

So the report comes out yesterday, and, less than a day later, the GOP somehow produces a letter from 65 different women saying he never assaulted them.

Is it just me, or did they release that letter a little too quickly?

The issue that's present here that isn't basically anywhere else is that this is a lifetime appointment to an extremely powerful position from which he will never be removed until he wants to.

I think this is the point: given the amount of information that is classified as confidential with Kavanaugh, it's impossible to test the seriousness of this allegation (these allegations?) one way or the other.

If its from that document then the fact is the FBI looked at it and immediately dismissed it.

FBI did no such thing. They gave it to the WH as apart of the vetting process (which is what they are suppose to do). FBI is in no position to turn this into a criminal matter, that would be up to the local authorities.
