President Lyndon Baines Johnson (D-TX)/Senator Hubert Horatio Humphrey (D-MN): 486/61.1%
Senator Barry Morris Goldwater (R-AZ)/William Edward Miller (R-NY): 52/38.5%

After the 1964, The Republican Party went into shambles. The once burgeoning Conservative movement within the Republican Party was quickly squashed due to the Landslide defeat of Johnson v Goldwater. Now, Nixonites and Rockefeller Republicans reign supreme. However, for the Democratic Party, a civil war is coming. The Vietnam war is deeply unpopular with the American populace at large and many Democrats have come out in opposition of the war and against President Johnson. With Riots running through the country and a President deeply unpopular due to a very disastrous war abroad, how will the country survive and who will lead them away from the chaos?

Possible Republican Candidates:

Former Governor Harold Stassen (R-MN) - Snowguy716
Senator John Tower (R-TX)
Governor James A. Rhodes (R-OH)
Senator Clifford Case (R-NJ) - x-guy
Senator Howard Baker (R-TN) - terp40hitch
Former Senator Barry Morris Goldwater (R-AZ) - Jaguar4Life
Senator Margaret Chase Smith (R-ME) - Mycool
Former Governor William Scranton (R-PA) - Sherrod Brown 2020

Former Secretary of Treasury C. Douglas Dillon (R-MA) - UWS

Possible Democratic Candidates:

Senator Rober Francis Kennedy (D-NY) - GoTfan
Representative Patsy Mink (D-HI) - Faust

Independents

New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller (I-NY)/Illinois Representative John Anderson (I-IL) - ?/?
Former Governor Ross Barnett (SD-MS)/Senator Richard Russell Jr. (SD-GA) - ASPN/JasonHitchcock

RULES:
(of which I stole from HCP, who stole from Wxtransit, who may or may not have stolen from Lumine's game, thanks, Lumine, wxtransit, and HCP)

This game will cover the 1968 US Presidential Election from January 1st, 1968 to November 5th, 1968, divided into three main phases:

Primary Phase: Assuming campaign announcements to have come earlier in the year, this primary season will take us from January 1968 to July 1968, with players from the Democratic and Republican Parties fighting to emerge as the frontrunner or even the nominee of their respective parties.

Convention Phase: Both main parties will enter this phase to decide on their eventual nominee. Considering at this point in time, all Conventions were brokered, a Candidate will only have to win Delegates here to get the Nomination, so you will have to battle for every state's delegates and bargain to the Nomination.

General Election Phase: Taking us from August 30th to November 5th, 1968, with eight turns of a week to account for the final stage of the campaign as players play the Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates, and potentially some key surrogates for their campaigns.

2.- The in-game length of turns will vary from days to an entire month depending on the circumstances, but all turns will last 5 days/120 Hours in RL. Duly informing of a turn absence will yield no penalty (a polling freeze or very limited loss), but simply not posting will bring consequences.

3.- Personal message me for endorsements! No candidate may recieve more than 2 per turn, and there are some special endorsements that will be reserved for key events or dates (for example, New Hampshire or Iowa Governors, or relevant newspapers like the Des Moines Register or the New Hampshire Union Leader).

4.- There will be debates if I get messages from all people in that party in the primaries that they want one, or they can agree for it here.

5.- Like other games, I will use a number randomizer to determine positive and negative news for the candidates. 1-5 will be positive experiences (1 being great news) and 95-100 will be negative experiences (100 being terrible news). 6-94 will be no news. Real life news will also feature as part of the game for players to exploit (or influence).

6.- Third Party candidates are allowed to join, but their respective gameplay will be focused on the General Election. The only exception is the Americans Independent Party, which may be a factor if a player wants to run as Wallace and tries to make him far more successful than OTL.

7 - If your candidate is not included in the provided list below, make sure to personal message me so that I can approve/reject the candidate. Please make your candidates realistic (they must be real people who would plausibly seek the nomination in 2020, if you don't know if they could work, just ask).

8. Have fun.

I would probably push the start to January 1st because they didn’t really have primaries, it was basically just a fight at the convention.

I would also like to sign up as James Rhodes

Granted, though I doubt you'll get much traction. You were crushed in 1964, after all

Governor George Romney announcement speech

Detroit, Michigan- “Hello People of Michigan! Thank you all for coming! Today I am joined by my beautiful wife Lenore, and my wonderful son Mitt to make an announcement. I am running for the Republican Nomination for President!
*crowd cheers*
We are stuck in a war we do not need to be in! If elected I will do my best to put a quick and easy end to this conflict in Vietnam, and bring our boys home!
*crowd cheers again*
This war was a massive failure from the Johnson Administration
*crowd cheers*
Furthermore, we need to improve education standards, we need to implement a scholarship program much like we have here, in this beautiful state of Michigan!
*crowd cheers*
Thank you! We will bring Welfare reform. We will bring true reform to Washington! Thank you all and God Bless!”

Senator Goldwater President announcement speech
April 2nd 1967 in Phoenix Arizona

Thank you thank you everyone!! A few years ago in this exact location I saw myself be defeated in the worst way any candidate would of been and after that election I thought to myself were my critics right?

I saw down and looked over what I did wrong and I said I did a lot of things that time around that I largely regret. The things I said and the things I did were completely horrible and I honestly thought long and hard of resigning from the senate. However I had a change of heart and I decided to research and look into the issues more harder.   And I am telling you right now that you have right now a whole new Barry Goldwater!

*Crowd cheers* Put it like this. I will fight for every person of this great county black, white,Hispanic, gay straight, rich, middle class,Republican,Democrat and Independent!!

Folks the founding fathers would roll in their graves if they saw how big this government is, All the taxes and fees you have to pay all the regulations business have, All the wasteful spending we have! The attacks and control on our 2nd ammdement!!! The idea of free enterprise being attack and the war that is going on in Vietnam that we can’t seem to win!  That would find it unacceptable!

So that is why I will once again in 1968 run for the Republican Party nomination for President Of the United States!

*Crowd claps and cheers*

In case anyone is wondering, the title is a reference to "Troubling Times" by Jerome How, which was used for "Bobby Kennedy for President"

Governor Ronald Reagan of California, January 1968

My friends, I believe the time of choosing is now. We need someone in the government who believes in the ideals of America: Freedom, peace, and liberty of the individual. We need to stand up against Communism in Vietnam and the world that threatens our ways of living in our country, and we need someone who believes in the full creative potential of the American individual and the American people. That's why I'm running for President of the United States.

*crowd cheers*
