How strange.
How can a gas problem infect so many homes and other buildings? How does/would it "enter" your home via the pipes, and cause a fire.
Scary stuff.

Non-expert speculation: contaminated gas with a contaminent that's stable in the pipes but starts fires when burned normally?

It seems that they are now saying that the gas lines may have been over-pressurized, and this is what caused the fires at about 40 homes and businesses.
One person has died.

The local gas company had been working on gas lines in the area, and described their work this way:
Columbia Gas earlier Thursday put out a news release saying it was upgrading natural gas lines in neighborhoods across the state, with a focus on enhanced safety features.

How can their work include "enhanced safety features," yet people are dying and homes destroyed?

PG&E would have made sure to do more to burn down the neighborhood.

It looks like overpressurization caused gas leaks in a large number of houses and these were the unlucky ones where something sparked an explosion.

One person died as an exploding chimney fell onto a passing car... yikes. At least only one person, with 39 homes being on fire from the natural gas explosions.
