3 Spankings as an alternative to a 5 day suspension? This is remarkably light and I'd want my parents to sign it if I was still in K-12. Far better to have some quick pain than go through all the extra work that comes with missing an entire week of classes.

Boulineau said parents can deny giving permission to the school. The form sent home explained the steps the school would take to discipline children with a paddle. "A student will be taken into an office behind closed doors. The student will place their hands on their knees or piece of furniture and will be struck on the buttocks with a paddle," the form, which was obtained by WRDW, reads. So, F the significant body of scientific, psychological research and literature that concludes corporal punishment is a harmful (physically, mentally, and developmentally) way of correcting wrong behavior, eh? What would those Psychologists know anyway? "I was spanked and turned out just fine! The problem with children today is the lack of a good ass-whoopin'!" WRONG. Corporal punishment is child abuse; it's not an effective method of correcting behavior, it doesn't teach right or wrong, and it doesn't make a child any more obedient, respectful, or well-behaved. It causes harm to their body and mind. It's no more correct than hitting a puppy or kitten (in fact, it's even worse because the child is human).

To the degree that corporal punishment might be useful, this ain't it. It needs to be administered close in time to the infraction for an association with the behavior one wants to provide negative reinforcement to be established. It also is only potentially useful for the very young. There's no point in having it as an option past 3rd or 4th grade, and it would need to be implemented in the classroom itself. I also think it should only be used to discourage behaviors that potentially could harm the child. Paddling for giving a teacher sass or being late to class or texting a friend in class or similar activities is not acceptable.
