Do many GOP politicians actually believe Trump is an innocent witch hunt victim? Or do they support Trump even though they think Trump is guilty?

This.

I think most of them are aware there are legitimate concerns. There are some who think it's a witch hunt. They're all willing to back him until the investigation is finished though.

Probably about one-third or more or less convinced it's a setup, the other two thirds of just covering Trump's, and by extension their own, asses.

I think some genuinely do, but they're scared this investigation may uncover some very scary and nasty skeletons they have in their own closets.

Some of them think that they could be exposed for having won questionable elections. If Trump's election was spurious, then so might theirs.

None of them actually believe it’s a witch hunt.

They are playing politics with our national security (as are some of their voters).

They will tell us after all these events have come to pass. They will all claim it is a witch hunt if nothing much more comes of this. Else, they are just going to say that they wanted to know for sure first.

No.

But they're too scared of angering Trump so they just parrot whatever he says to make him happy.

What about his voters? His approval rating is 40% and those who think this is all ruse to obstruct him is about 30%.

Only average Republican voters think it's a witch hunt. Republican politicians actually believe the investigation is legitimate. Most major Republicans in office believe Mueller is right.

No. They're just trying to cover their ass from Trump's rabid base. But it's just as bad to not care and enable the rhetoric that asserts ill-will from Mueller.

I tend to think that most of them think Mueller will never touch Trump, but the whole thing will make the GOP look bad, given how Trump has successfully completed his "hostile takeover" of the GOP.

The GOP is Trump's party now.  If his underlings look bad, it makes them look bad, even if Trump's not implicated.

It was a friendly merger. The Republican Party was thoroughly corrupt, dishonest and morally bankrupt before Trump came along.

Most GOP politicians actually think Mueller is on the right side of history. Helping Trump will hurt GOP incumbents in swing districts that trend Democratic.

I don’t think any of the senators truly do but there’s probably a not insignificant number of nutjobs in the House that do
