Lloyd Bentsen was the last Democrat to win a senate seat in TX. If Bill Clinton picked another Treasury Secretary and Bentsen had run for his seat again in 1994, does get elected one more time? It was a heavy GOP year and TX moved to the right. But he was a popular incumbent. Takes on this?

Bentsen would probably win comfortably and would for sure be succeeded by a Republican in 2000.

After the blowout in Tennessee, I don't see why Bentsen would fare much better.

I'll guess Hutchison manages a narrow win after being underestimated.

Hutchinson would not have run if Bentsen was running for re-election.  A weaker Republican would have been nominated.  Bentsen had significant committee assignments that were important to the Texas Business Community, and Bentsen enjoyed significant business support in Texas.

He'd have joined Mario Cuomo and Ann Richards as a high profile losing Democrat of 1994.
