It’s going to be off the hook when the bill passes the Senate 98-1 (Rand Paul) and then Trump vetoes the bill.

Trump doesn't get a say.  The name of the Old Senate Office Building is established by the Standing Orders of the Senate, which means the Senate can name it (and the other Senate Office Buildings) whatever it wants.

They tortured him to almost death, so he should be able to call them any racial slur he wants to.

Beginning in August 1968, McCain was subjected to a program of severe torture. He was bound and beaten every two hours; this punishment occurred at the same time that he was suffering from dysentery. Further injuries brought McCain to "the point of suicide.

There are quite a few insults, many of them profane that one could use without using racial slurs. That said, it doesn't change my opinion of McCain much at all.

I like John McCain, but I'd rather rename the building after Bob Dole instead...if it has to be Senate Republican who served a long time.

Dole was a party leader for many years. McCain on the other hand, spent most of his career fighting leadership at every turn.

Whilst Senator Russell did what? I’d much rather see figures like McCain/Wellstone/Feingold honoured then rather generic party tools like Dole.

Seriously good move though

I support this. John McCain was a hero and great patriot, even though I disagreed with him on a lot of policies. Dick Russell was a racist.

Oh, he's still a shameless, slimy partisan hack, but he does know how to be sentimental in just the right way when he needs to.

There are few bills that should pass unanimously, and this is one of them.

Guys, Panda's statements about LBJ being an avowed racist and Dirksen doing the heavy lifting for the passage of the Civil Rights Act are among his least egregious lies.

I don't know. John McCain may have a mixed legacy, but is it fair to sully his name by attaching it to an office building of an institution as decadent and depraved as the US Senate?

Russell Brevard Russell was a staunch segregationist who was nonetheless beloved by the national political press. He acted the part of a dignified gentleman and lead the Southern block of Senators in puting arguments against civil rights into terms that reasonable moderates and liberals could stomach. Whose legacy could possibly match that of the Senate's any better than that?

Another take is that Russell was skilled enough to put a veneer of respectability over a fundamentally evil practice called Jim Crow, that kept it alive for a few extra years. I don't find much to celebrate about being a skilled master of fashioning veneers to enable evil.

Actually, it's among his most egregious. It's literally the complete opposite of what happened. Dirksen was a spineless wimp who stood for nothing. Not only did he do virtually nothing for civil rights, but it was in fact LBJ who was almost solely responsible for the passage of the Civil Rights Act. Countless other civil rights bills (most of which had been much more watered down) had failed to pass in the two decades previous to LBJ's heroic effort. In fact, even Kennedy had gotten nowhere trying to pass the Civil Rights Act despite having it as a high priority.

Regarding LBJ v Dirksen, yes the statement giving the credit to Dirksen over LBJ is clearly wrong, and may be trolling, may be lying, but we don't really know that, and it is certainly not conducive to civil discussion to go down that route, and is subject to violating the TOS (in this instance I am not reporting or infracting because: 1) the statement was clearly false, and 2) I wanted to put up this post instead).

I am mentioning this, because wouldn't it be better to get the actual facts on the table, and leave it at that, rather than start trashing posters and their motives? Here is what appears to a very good article, that seems to do exactly that (get the actual facts on the table). Dirksen while not having much of a record on Civil Rights that was any good, did step up to the plate to help LBJ break the filibuster. Also relevant, is that LBJ himself had previously thwarted Civil Rights legislation as majority leader when he was close to Richard Russell, among other things watering down the Civil Rights Act of 1957, to strip it of its voting rights provisions (which would have in the South ended racist white Democrats of their control of the Dem party in the South  at an earlier time than when it occurred), and in the process I might add took rather desperate measures to save the filibuster rules, which almost went down in order to get a vote on the Act in its non watered down version, so he too had a mixed record until he himself changed course under different circumstances.

Let's put it this way. In 30 years, it should be the McCain, Dole, and Dirksen (or maybe Biden) Senate Office Buildings

Yeah, McCain, Dole, Biden seems about right.

Thurmond, Helms, Inouye.

Either you are a racist, sexist jackass (with Inyoue being thrown in as fig leaf to cover up the racism), or you are trolling.

Which is it?

Senate Republicans are already opposing the name change, but the jewel of the article is this:
