There are few bills that should pass unanimously, and this is one of them.

Good.

Whatever one make think of McCain, that building shouldn't be named after Dick Russell.

I would much rather have this building named after an American hero instead of a avowed segregationist, so good move.

I like John McCain, but I'd rather rename the building after Bob Dole instead...if it has to be Senate Republican who served a long time.

Dole was a party leader for many years. McCain on the other hand, spent most of his career fighting leadership at every turn.

They can always rename Dirksen or Hart after him.

Not Dirksen, it is a crime of history that avowed racist LBJ is remembered for civil rights when Everett Dirksen did all the heavy lifting

I suppose renaming Hart is a fair compromise.

Great decision. The building shouldn't be named after an unrepentant Dixiecrat.

If I was to rename the Dirksen building after anyone, I'd pick someone from the list of Joe Biden, Pat Leahy (after Leahy leaves the Senate, obviously), Claiborne Pell or George Mitchell.

Or you could name after Barack Obama...but as he served only four years in the Senate and two of those were spent running for President, I'd be hesitant to do that.

It is not a myth, pretty much every account of the 1964 civil rights bill backs this up

Dirksen and LBJ both contributed to the civil rights bill getting passed. It was a team effort. LBJ was a master parliamentarian and it took someone of his skill to outmaneuver Southern Democrats. Dirksen was necessary to corral GOP votes. Both were necessary.

Out of those, Biden probably had the greatest influence on the senate, Obama didn't even serve a full term and was probably one of least significant senators (in terms of legislation) while he was there
