Let's put it this way. In 30 years, it should be the McCain, Dole, and Dirksen (or maybe Biden) Senate Office Buildings

I like John McCain, but I'd rather rename the building after Bob Dole instead...if it has to be Senate Republican who served a long time.

Dole was a party leader for many years. McCain on the other hand, spent most of his career fighting leadership at every turn.

They can always rename Dirksen or Hart after him.
Not Dirksen, it is a crime of history that avowed racist LBJ is remembered for civil rights when Everett Dirksen did all the heavy lifting

lol, Republicans love this myth.
It is not a myth, pretty much every account of the 1964 civil rights bill backs this up

Dirksen helped secure votes for the bills final passage, but he didn't do the heavy lifting.

Yeah, McCain, Dole, Biden seems about right.

However, Dirksen was a very vocal opponent of the 1968 Civil Rights Act... until King got shot.

Objectively speaking, Dirksen had a larger role in the bill, LBJ was just able to get in front of the cameras

Lmao.....just no.

Dirksen played zero role in the crafting of the bill (that was all on LBJ and the liberal wing of the Democratic party). Again, Dirksen deserves credit for doing the right thing and getting his people to vote for it, but he was very much the junior partner in all of this.

Lol Dirksen wrote much of the bill and was the one who introduced it, LBJ was an avowed racist who only came around to civil rights when it suited him politically. He had a record very much similar to that of Strom Thurmond and John Sparkman when he himself was in the senate

The Russell building is nice and deserves to be named after someone who isn't a segregationist. You could do better than McCain, though.

Very much in favor of replacing the segregationist with the hero. Do it.

P.s. its possible to appreciate the efforts of both Dirksen and LBJ (who was not an avowed racist...) in passing civil rights reform...

Whether or not you think LBJ was a good president, let's just say his documented statements, including the use of racial slurs, put Donald Trump to shame

What?

The bill was introduced by Emmanuel Cellers after Kennedy's speech in June of 1963.

The Russell Building needs renaming, but not after McCain.  The Henry Clay Senate Office Building sounds nice.

Did he really? I didn't know that.
Just in AZ or at the federal level?

It’s going to be off the hook when the bill passes the Senate 98-1 (Rand Paul) and then Trump vetoes the bill.
