No. Columbus was a despicable genocidal f'uck.

South Dakota actually calls today something like "Indigenous Peoples Day" which may sound overtly PC but is still better than celebrating that worthless piece of sh!t.

Yes.  If it weren't for Columbus, we might not be here.

Of course celebrate it. Who does it harm?

I pretty much ignore the holiday because everyone else does. Its not like much happens on the day anyway, but it did get me out of school today, and that makes me happy. Grin

yes.

as an aside, Columbus Day is a big festivity in Columbus.  Sections of downtown are blocked off, and the parking lot of WCBI-TV4 turns into a stage set.  There are mullet-rock bands and R/B bands.  (yes, the mullet-rock shows are generally attended by wifebeater-wearing, mulleted white guys with feedstore caps, and the R/B coverband shows are usually attended by black guys with oversized jerseys and big gold clocks hanging from big gold chains around their necks, in case you're curious.)  Anyway, it's loud and it's ugly.  And there's a smaller stage in a city park with folk singers.  Sunday in our morning stroll (it's celebrated the last sunday before Columbus Day proper 'round here) we came upon this joan baez looking woman with an accoustic guitar singing and playing.  And there were all these bizarre characters.  It was supposed to be a children's show, but my son was frighted, not so much by Columbus with his prissy red-and-gold 15th century attire and feathered beret, but by a very creepy Mother Goose and her inclination to kiss and hug every baby that strolled by her.  Frightening, it was.  Still, it gives the kids and the grownups another excuse to get ripped and dance around the streets.  Why not?

I see no reason to celebrate it, but I don't see any compelling reason not to celebrate it either. The balance is tilted by the fact that it is an extra day off. So yes.

Sounds fine to me even though I don't get off. Columbus's pioneering in mass slaughter (though unintentional) should certainly be celebrated.

No.

No banks, no post offices, and no government agencies opened don't phase me in the least........but the damn liquor stores are closed, and that makes me mad.    Ya, we're still in the dark ages here in PA.

Yes...and it's called Thanksgiving day in Canada BTW.

The more holidays, the better.  There could be a Salem Witch Trial Day for all I care if it was a holiday.

interesting.  here, it's a bank and PO holiday, but schools, bars, and liquor stores stay open.

Oh, and I learned that there was a pet parade, though I didn't attend.  At least it would explain why we saw a woman with a huge tiara-wearing cat on a leash in the park on sunday.  My wife and I had been wondering about that.

Yes, as I don't have to go to school.  Some of the liberals at my school go to school and protest on their day off, while the rest of us don't care what a day off is for, and don't think about Columbus himself at all.

So you don't buy that Columbus was from Genoa or that Genoa was not Italy back then? I know there are several varying theories floating out there.

Columbus was most likely from eastern Spain. His family had royal connections and if they hadn't he would have never gotten the royal audiences he had.
