Scenario 1:

Democrats take back the House in 2018 and the White House and Senate in 2020. They replace Ginsburg and Breyer with very Liberal judges . However they lose the House in 2022, lose the senate in 2024 and lose the White House to Nikki Haley in 2024 . After 2024 the Republicans control the trifecta for the next 6-8 years .

Scenario 2:

Trump wins re-election in 2020 along with a Republican Senate . From 2020-2022 Trump is able to replace either Ginsburg or Breyer with a conservative justice and also Clarance Thomas retires so he can be replaced by a conservative justice as well. Then in 2022 Republicans lose the senate in 2022 and then lose the White House by an 2008 style defeat in 2024 . Democrats then are able to control the trifecta for the next 6-8 years after 2024.

Both of those scenarios are dreadful.

In a way it was the same choice the Republicans had in 2016 just in reverse

You are right about this being the same choice for the GOP in 2016, with that said it doesn't change the fact that both scenarios absolutely suck, so I really can't choose which one I'd prefer.

Tough call, but it really depends on the magnitude of the wins and losses.

Scenario 2 would make for a better bench downballot and quite possibly the elevation of a leftist McConnell and a definite end to Pelosi.

"which would you rather prefer" ... interesting phrasing.
