I'm pretty new here, and it's tough for me to believe this one hasn't been covered, but after some searching I just can't seem to find it. Sorry if it has.

Anyway, this scenario assumes Bush still picks Quayle as his veep, Clinton sticks with Gore, and all third party candidates still run.

EVs:
Bush/Quayle - 280
Clinton/Gore - 258

Popular Vote:
Bush/Quayle - 50%
Clinton/Gore - 48%

Anyone think Clinton could have pulled it off?

It could be possible for Clinton to pull it off, but in 1992 he had it in the bag.  Clinton might appeal to the south a little more and less to say the midwest.  Clinton is a good politician though.  That map looks pretty dead-on.

You guys aren't looking at the obvious.  Clinton clearly was not ready to run in 88, nor could he have polled anywhere near GHWB.  1992 was tailor made for Clinton.  1988 was a totally different election, and Clinton had yet to be groomed.  His speech at the 1988 DNC is probably one of the least memorable in history (unless you like to remember bad speeches) and was acctually criticized by those who cared enough to notice.

I doubt Clinton would have won in 1988 bearing in mind GHW Bush was more or less elected to serve Reagan's third term
