How did Judas Iscariot die?

According to Matthew 27:5, Judas threw down the blood money he had been given to betray Jesus and then went away and hanged himself.

However, Acts 1:18 states that Judas used the silver to purchase a field for himself where he fell and had his intestines burst out, not expressing any remorse for what he had done.

Which account of Judas' death is more likely to be accurate?

As I recall, the usual way of reconciling the two passages is that Judas was buried in the potter's field bought with the thirty pieces of silver. Then as his corpse rotted the intestines burst out from the gases generated from their putrefaction.

There are problems with this attempt at harmonization, but not nearly as many as with some of the other parts of the gospels such as the arrest of Jesus.
