Jeff Flake has alienated nearly every political ally he had or could have had.

I don't feel bad in the slightest.

He has walked the walk

Voting for tax reform , deregulation, and the Supreme Court nomination has nothing to do with trump because any Republicans would have done that .

He has stood up to trump on tarrifs by blocking low level judges (blocking Supreme Court ones would be dumb )

I'm just hoping he primaries Trump and gets absolutely destroyed.

I wish I was that optimistic. She's one of those politicians that people approve of to an irrational degree, like Larry Hogan. These people present themselves as moderates and people eat it up.

They may be moderates but that doesn't warrant their ridiculous approval ratings among Democrats. They're moderates, but moderate conservatives nonetheless.

Agreed on that point for sure, and the other way around, too.  Why any Republican, like, loves Joe Manchin is beyond me.

I generally like Jeff Flake but he's been silly lately.  There are good and bad ways to oppose Trump. Blocking court nominees over tariffs is dumb.

Blocking appellate judges over tariffs is valuable to Democrats, seeing how few cases SCOTUS takes up every year

As long as Trump nominates some more-or-less conventional conservative judge, why would anyone expect Jeff Flake to help block the nomination?

and he shouldn't

Jeff Flake opposes Trump because Trump is an unhinged manchild. Flake doesn't oppose movement conservatism. Why on earth would Flake vote against something if he supports it? To trigger Trump? Lol.

The opposition’s focus should rest squarely on Susan Collins.

Exactly.  This "put up or shut up" attitude from Democrats is one of the dumber things that has been floated on this site lately.

and he shouldn't

Flake shouldn't have blocked Merrick Garland in 2016, if the truth be known.  There was no reason Garland should not have been voted on; indeed, there was no reason Garland shouldn't have been confirmed.

The only way Jeff Flake was correct in whatever he did to block Merrick Garland is if you are willing to say (A) the SCOTUS is a partisan institution, and (B) you're OK with that.  Citizens United was right-wing judicial activism, as was Bush v. Gore.  Let's not kid ourselves.  I never thought that Trump would be a modern day Herbert Hoover appointing a Louis Brandeis to the SCOTUS.  Those days are over.  The GOP is bound and determined to have no more David Souters any more than the Democrats wish for more Byron Whites.

The SCOTUS is a partisan institution.  Let's be honest.  Flake's just playing politics like everyone else.

I don’t disagree, but true SCOTUS becoming explicitly partisan is a major dent in institionalism in the USA

Sounds like a perfectly sensible strategy  to me.
