So, where did the student in question get the white bedsheet and burning cross?

And if the teacher knew that this student was actually going to dress up in Klan regalia, then why the heck did approve it?

obviously the kids purpose for doing it is 100% of it.  Did he do it to play the villain and show how they exist in history?  Like dressing up as Che or Mao?  That should be fine.  If he's doing it to celebrate the Klan, well that's clearly a problem.

Maybe he did intend it to be totally educational, but what about how it may have been perceived by other students? He can control his intent, he cannot control others' perception. Los Angeles is a pretty diverse place, and its very likely that other students of different backgrounds may have been frightened or offended by such a display, especially in the current national environment. Plus, with his face covered, how would they have known that this was someone they knew and that they had nothing to fear? I think this whole thing is inappropriate and should not have happened. Children should definitely learn about the Klan, but this is not the way to teach them.

That's it - no more movies portraying the Klan or Nazis are allowed to be made in Hollywood. It's now a crime to portray someone bad in California Roll Eyes Does this not sound like a more interesting project than a 7th Abe Lincoln dress-up, where you know, people like actually learn something new.

one 14 year old in an obviously fake Klan outfit terrifies someone?...even more so in a place that is very diverse?

again, it's about motive here and I suppose a little "time and place" too.  Was he just wandering around, doing his daily business in the Klan outfit?  Or did he put it on special for the class and took it off when he was done?  Neither article I've read/skimmed on it was clear about it.  I can't imagine he road the bus wearing it, that sh**t would get you killed in LA.

Yeah, my best friend in 4th grade dressed up as Mao for a history project. Granted, dressing up as the KKK has a much more personal symbolism than Mao for most Americans, so it's probably a good idea to run it by your classmates and school officials first.

It's not the individual stupid bigots that frighten me, either some teen punk in LA or the wanna-be Nazi spoiled brat in the White House. It's all the people who feel it necessary to support and make excuses for them.

I still don't that dressing up as a Klansman is the same as dressing up like a historical figure (perhaps with the exception of something based out Nazi Germany) but as long as the kid didn't do it out of nefarious purposes, I can't see it as anything more than a naive mistake.
