Well, from that comment, I gather he's sold out the GOP base with the nomination of Harriet Miers to replace O'Connor on the SCOTUS

He didn't surrender. He played you guys and the Dem Senators off against each other to do exactly as he always wanted to.
Just my take.

Yes, but we should have expected it.  Bush supported reauthorizing the assault weapons ban.  He nominated Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General.  He supports increases in Medicaid spending.

Considering that I oppose establishing any sort of national religion, I don't see why you're calling me a theocrat.

At least he was honest about that. Bush said he'd appoint justices in the mold of Scalia and Thomas. There are plenty of them: McConnell, Alito, Luttig, Jones, etc.

Instead he nominates someone in the mold of Souter.

I agree this woman is an unqualified joke, but the fact that Republicans hate her so much makes me happy. Looks like we traded Rehnquist for a Kennedy and O'Connor for a Souter. A lot better than I was expecting. Plus nominating an unqualified joke will hurt Bush and make him look ever worse. I'm quite happy now.

I absolutely love how this group judges on absolutely no information, and that is a shot at both the left and the right.

We do know these things about her:

1.  She's held leadership positions in groups of lawyers.

2.  She has been a successful trial attorney.

3.  She's has served in local government.

Now, none of those things, in my mind, would cause me to vote against her.

We do know these things about her indeed.
And a couple more.
4. She has never been a judge.
5. She has been appointed to positions by Bush before - and had a business relationship with him even before that.
Just to be fair.

I'm not entirely thrilled about her.  I am trying to see if I can get a good conspiracy theory going that works its way onto a cable news show; so please spread my stuff far and wide.

Basically, it is all my way of saying "I reserve judgement until I know more abut her."

Her writings as WH counsel may all be strict constructionist stuff.  Bush may know this and have shared it with some of the republican senators while keeping it from Reid and the dems.  he may be trying to reverse Souter them.

She sucks, but Democrats shouldn't be too happy. Bush probably just told her to be Scalia's lap dog and pretend it's him.

This is probably a lose-lose for both sides.

I cannot wait until Roberts makes you eat those words this month with his decisions over euthanasia and partial-birth abortion.

I don't really care about those, and Rehnquist would've voted the same way anyway. I'm just happy he has defended porn dealers.

That was my initial reaction - Have the balls to nominate a Scalia Jr.

So, either:  1) He has no balls  or 2) He's snookered the libs and she is Scalia Jr.
