It is constantly changing.  There are days when you really feel awed by how great it is and then there are days when you think we're not living up to the soaring oratory and the majesty.

But I have always believed that the United States is not any worse than any other country on Earth.  Every single place on Earth has things about it that are not so great.

What's wonderful about the United States is that it changes, and that even if it seemed like we were in the darkest days, there's always the possibility that our darkest days will become our brightest days.

America's best days and worst days are probably ahead.  We're still a very young country.

The greatest country in the world if "greatest" is defined simply as "the most powerful".  Many countries, including even a few Latin American countries such as Costa Rica and Uruguay, are more humane and have greater respect for liberty.

Oh well, there are still plenty of countries that are much worse.

A country that was born as a great (albeit tragically flawed for obvious reasons) indictment of the corrupt and self serving values of the Old World, with a decent few redeeming places in history but alas has fluffed its great potential.

IMO the real rot set in with Jackson, who really strikes me as the great villain in American history: a violent, thuggish, nationalistic warping of Jefferson ideals (whatever you think of TJ the man).
