HJs.  Publicly advertising your biases before hearing a single case goes against everything the judiciary was intended to be.

And Alabama is a great example of why they shouldn't exist.

The judicial branch is meant to be a balance from the ever-shifting tides of public opinion.

I've worked in the courtrooms of elected judges and appointed judges. Neither type was noticeably better in quality; maybe a few more "politician-lite" judges from the elected bench and a few more good ol' boys on the appointed side. Its an election either way; either you're campaigning among the populace or you're campaigning among the governor and his cronies. Neither type is chosen based on merit. And no judge I've ever seen acts like they owe anything to anyone.

So everything else being equal, I'm fine with electing judges. If it doesn't make a difference, why not have the democratic process be a part of things?

Nominated judges also owe someone for their position Tongue

I am against electing judges, but here in Texas we like to vote for everything.

A really good idea. My trust in the Dutch democratic system and in public opinion is endlessly higher than my trust in our judicial system. Judges generally have a liberal/progressive bias, find themselves in an upper middle-class bubble, read the same newspapers, and live in mansions in suburbs or exurbs that are almost 100% Dutch.

There's nothing in the constitution that calls for elected judges

Better than allowing politicians to appoint judges. When politicians appoint judges, it prevents Democracy from functioning.

To be fair I was thinking about appointments to the Supreme Court when I posted that.

The judicial system is not, and should not be, a pure democracy. That would be tyranny.

Probably the single worst thing about the US constitution.

Ironically, the Federal government is the only one that doesn't have elected judges.

I would love to see a judge get elected somewhere on an SGP ticket. That would be crazy Cheesy

I know this wasn't entirely serious, but I wouldn't want judges to be elected on partisan tickets and I would wish to keep unelected judges to determine whether someone is guilty or not. In case the person is guilty, elected judges (or juries, even better) can decide on the punishment.

I'm not completely hostile to the idea, but in America the concept is handled dismally.
