No, but it has less to do with politics and more to do with the facts that sports only matter for me in a regional/Catholic chauvinist sense. That said, “kneeling” sounds to me like a sign of respect. If they were lounging, it might seem different to me.

No, they have a Constitutional right to not stand or kneel if they wish. No different than burning the flag in protest. Forcing anyone to stand for the national anthem and punishing them for not doing so kind of comes off as Fascist.

I agree that the anthem shouldn't be in sports, but about the flag, tell that to the firefighters on 9/11 and see what happens next.

The firefighters on 9/11 are worthy of respect. I don't need a piece of cloth to tell me that. The same flag that decorated the plane that blew up the Kunduz Hospital. The same flag on the uniform of Eddie Gallagher while he massacred innocent civilians.

Firefighters perform acts of bravery because of a shared humanity in the role they agreed to play in society.

No, but I do wonder what policy changes would have to happen for the athletes who have chosen not to stand to reconsider their decision.  If the answer is "literally nothing" then it's a dumb attention-whoring shtick and not a real protest. 

Like, are we just going to irreparably slide into irreverence for our national symbols?  What's going to replace them as culturally-unifying motifs?  Branded consumer products and memes?
