Trump's retirement after a serious case of pneumonia after getting the flu was somewhat unexpected, but Haley quickly hired a campaign staff including Nick Ayers, Ken Mehlman, and other big names. She defeated Pence, Cruz, Carson, and Amash in the primary pretty handily and chose Sandoval as her running mate. Newsom successfully defeated Sanders, Warren, Harris, Gabbard, and De Blasio in his primary race.

Haley has been pretty well-respected by both Democrats and Republicans for her relative sanity in this White House, and Sandoval has kept himself far from Trump. Newsom and Abrams will have a collective 4 years of executive experience, while Haley/Sandoval will have 16 (20 if you count Haley's tenure as UN Ambassador).
