In 1976 if Gerald Ford didn't run for the nomination for president and would step down in January 1977, who would run. Ronald Reagan would still run and probably have the best chance of getting it but what about Rockefeller? He was VP at the time, his presidential ambitions were well known, he has big money behind him, with no Ford to contend with would Rockefeller be able to win the moderates support and defeat Reagan? Any thoughts?

Reagan wins the nomination, as he came close to beating Ford in real life, and loses the general.  Another more moderate Republican (Bush, Baker, maybe Ford himself) beats Carter in 1980.

I agree Reagan would be the front runner for the nomination but would Carter defeat him in the general? Reagan's charisma without being saddled like Ford was with Watergate would easily make the better candidate to OTL Carter.

Reagan was still seen as Goldwater 2.0 and I can see enough northern moderates that went for Ford going for Carter if Reagan is the nominee. Even 1980 was more anti Carter than Pro Reagan.

If only this happened in real life, we would have been spared two terms of Reagan in the eighties.

Rockefeller's last chance at getting elected President was 1968 (or '72 if HHH or another Democrat somehow wins in '68).

On the one hand it's hard to imagine a Republican winning after Watergate, on the other, Ford barely lost as it is and Reagan probably does better in the south. He picks up at least Mississippi (the closest southern state that time) and if he ca get Texas too he wins.
