“State Rep. Ilhan Omar is frequently mentioned by operatives as a likely candidate. State Sen. Scott Dibble and former Minnesota House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher are also mentioned as possible candidates.”

I think that there's going to be a significant amount of furor over an Ellison entry, but he's going to end up not jumping in. Even if he does decide to pull the lever, though, it still has the potential to be a very interesting primary. I'm not so sure that he'd be the automatic front-runner, considering the (seemingly) large bench of potential (good) DFL candidates.

Isn't this a step backwards? I always felt that way with Xavier Becerra. Especially since there is no open senate or gubernatorial seat coming up soon.

Ellison has been frustrated with Congress and wants to take the quickest way out he can. He's probably been looking for an exit ever since he lost the DNC chair race.

He must really not be happy in Congress. I’m curious if Pelikan drops out now, after winning the DFL endorsement. I have doubts about Ellison winning statewide, including in the primary

This.  Also, I am mildly worried no one will get their petitions in before closing and Republicans will get a free seat.

Ellison will turn off many rural Democrats and independents needed for a victory in Minnesota. A Murphy ticket for Governor would have a similar effect. Needs to be Walz or Swanson atop the ticket.

Last election the only other candidates on the ballot were the Republican and "Legal Marijuana Now". Who do you think would win an election between those two in this district? Tongue

(Assuming a Democrat just doesn't run and win as a write in.)

The Republican will win, surely. Hennipen County voted for Harding in 1920!

It appears a random Some Guy has also filed for the DFL nom, so in this unlikely event the DFL probably just talks him into withdrawing and letting the real candidate replace him.

Apparently the SoS is handing out snacks and refreshments to the press at the district office - they are all waiting too see who applies for the house race.

Ilhan Omar shows up for those who were hyped for that.

State Sen. Bobby Joe Champion is in. I find it amusing how he's just wearing an NYC t-shirt to file for Congress in MN.

I realize this isn't happening but I was really hoping Legal Marijuana Now would luck their way into a free seat.

I also read that Margaret Anderson Kelliher came out of the woods to file for this seat. Stribble is a no, so it looks like it’ll primarily be a battle between Omar and Anderson Kelliher. The new vs. the old.

Kelliher would likely be a better Congresswoman from what little I know about the two candidates.

I think Anderson Kelliher has an advantage though. MN-05 has a surprising amount of suburbs, and they’re pretty white. Her 3 serious opponents (Bobby Champion, Patricia Torres, and Ilhan Omar) are all racial minorities who represent parts of the city of Minneapolis and they’ll probably split the vote with each other.

Keith Ellison’s a great candidate for Minnesota AG, and we’ll be an even better candidate for future statewide office (US Senate or Governor).
