According to voter registration rolls:

California Republicans hit rock bottom
New figures show the once-proud state GOP has been relegated to third-party status.

As a Democrat and a Californian, I am happy that my home state is repudiating everything the current GOP stands for, but I am concerned about unaccountable one-party rule in my state. At this point, California could actually turn into the dystopia that conservatives think that it is and Democrats would still win because the GOP brand is so toxic in this state. I almost wish the CA GOP would dissolve and reinvent itself as the "Conservative Party" with positions similar to that of European center-right parties so we can actually have some accountability in Sacramento. Jerry Brown has been a good check on the legislature, but, unfortunately, he's leaving office in January.

The state GOP has alienated moderates and on top of that a lot of the hardcore conservative choose to register as decline to state. The party strength is becoming more isolated toward rural areas.

Obviously the CA GOP is in a bad way, but I'd quibble with the description of "third-party status".  To me that would imply there are two other actual parties ahead of them, which is not the case.

I'm not a Californian. I'm a New Yorker but I completely agree with you.

Agreed-independents aren't a party. Misleading title IMO.

At least in Washington, we have probably the most robust Socialist organizations in the country, likely as a direct result of the decline in the GOP, consolidation by the Democrats, and the top-two primary system, so that's always something to look forward to.

If stuff like the “head tax” and Sawant’s general oeuvre are what we have to look forward to then that’s not necessarily a good thing

Decline to State is not a party, but it still is bad for the GOP to be trailing it.

California no longer has partisan primaries. When President Donald Trump is back on the ballot legions of voters will register into the GOP to register their support for President Trump.

A state with the most right-wing GOP and the most left-wing Democrats was bound to have this happen eventually.

(I don't know how Cali's GOP is somehow more right wing than Alabama or Utah, though)

Weak.

I mean, it's not like the CAGOP hasn't been undergoing a slow decline for decades or anything like that...

Yes, the topic title is quite misleading. By the criteria of the thread title, there are many states where either the Democrats or the Republicans are a "third party". Looking at this (unfortunately outdated) article, the Democrats were as recently as 2014 a "third party" in New Hampshire, despite having had won three straight Presidential elections in the state by that point.

Considering that it would almost certainly lead to more proposals like the untenably expensive single-payer healthcare plan, it would indeed not be good. Under those circumstances I may start voting for centrist Dems in close primaries, since a socialist vs. Republican general would be a terrible outcome.

Trump got the lowest percentage of the vote in CA for any Presidential candidate in post-FDR history.

Indeed, at 31.62% he did worse than any major party candidate since 1924, just a bit worse than Alf Landon's 31.70% in 1936.  In 1924, John Davis only got 8%%, but that was a three-way race; Robert LaFollette got over 33% in the state.
