I've thought for the longest time that Mexico belongs as a part of the United States (Canada too, but for the purposes of this question just Mexico)

Say tomorrow the Mexican government petitioned the United States government to be absorbed into the Union.

Would you support it? Why or why not?

Mexico would need trillions of dollars to begin to have United States levels of infrastructure, and even our infrastructure is in desperate need of funding. The local and regional governments are very prone to corruption from private interests and cartels, and changing the flag at the local city hall wouldn't change that.

Overall, I think it would be a nightmare for the United States.

I would require Mexico to hold a referendum on the issue. If it returns a Yes result, then allow them in.

Question: Who would benefit if Mexico joined the US?
The GOP, because of how socially conservative Mexico is, or the Democrats, because Mexico is heavily Hispanic?

Yes, absolutely.  I've thought this ever since I first learned about the strong bonds forged between our two nations in the 19th century.  Stronger together! (With a US Flag, Constitution, etc.)

Yes. Provisional military governors and anti-corruption commissions would allow us to run a massive War on Cartels and mostly win within 4 years.

Ah, yes, just look at the successes of the War on Drugs and Mexico's current drug war...so much winning we're getting tired of it.

Goodness, no. In fact, I wouldn't mind a return of South Texas and parts of Arizona/New Mexico to them.

The area that was annexed from Mexico was dominated by Native Americans, mostly Southwestern tribes, with relatively few white settlers (except in Texas). There were very few Mexican people in those territories in the first place. Actually annexing Mexico would have meant adding nearly ten million people who would be completely hostile to the notion of joining the US.

Not happening tomorrow because it would screw Trump in 2020. I agree that it would probably cost us too much money.

In a direct confrontation with the cartels, the U. S. would carry the day.

Do you realize you're literally proposing we ramp up the War on Drugs to unprecedented military levels?

Wait a minute, are you a Duterte fan?

If there is a clear desire on the part of the Mexican people, then of course I would support it (the same goes for Canada). That said, I believe it is far more likely that the US dissolve into a number of different countries than the absorption of Mexico (or Canada).

**I would mainly support such an idea because it would end the division of the Californias...it was/is a historical injustice that California was partitioned after the Mexican War. All of California should have been 1) granted independence, 2) incorporated into the US, or 3) remained part of Mexico after the war. To me, the wall/fence between Tijuana and San Diego is as repugnant as the Berlin Wall was.

Goodness, no. In fact, I wouldn't mind a return of South Texas and parts of Arizona/New Mexico to them.

Broke: Republicans need to focus on the Rust Belt to counteract them losing grip on Texas and Arizona
Woke: Republicans need to move from safe R states to Texas and Arizona to prevent republicans from losing them
Bespoke: Republicans need to petition the government to cede highly hispanic areas in Texas and Arizona to prevent Democrats from winning there

I know that's probably not your reason but whatever it makes for a good meme.
