The investigation started after Papadopoulos had his drunken experience with the Australian diplomat. When you throw in all the other people in Trump's orbit who had suspicious interactions/connections with Russian intelligence/oligarchs, then it shouldn't be that surprising.

But if you're going to write off the FBI (I suppose that is who you mean?) then there wouldn't be any point in debating this because you'd essentially have to make up your own arguments to fill the void of information left by excluding that agency.
