No surprise, I expect Ducey to appoint Cindy.

What are the chances she runs in 2022?

Slim. The special election would be in 2020. Cindy is unlikely to run in 2020.

If Ducey doesn't lose this year, odds are he runs in a 2020 special.

Why would it matter if he loses? I think he would run either way.

IMHO, John McCain can get to 2022 before dying. After all, he's a fighter his mother Roberta McCain is still alive today at 106 years old so he has good genes.

When it comes to who could run for his seat, I would say someone like Martha McSally if she doesn't win in 2018 or Ben Quayle.

Zero.  I also doubt this even ends up happening at all since it's pretty well-known how much she hates being even remotely in the spotlight.

The average prognosis for his cancer is 12-15 months. He was diagnosed last July. This news isn't shocking though, I expected Meghan to be appointed but Cindy isn't the most shocking pick. Ultimately, this whole situation is tragic, good for Ducey if he appoints a non-politician to replace McCain.

It depends on when he dies.

It depends on when he dies.

If it happens literally today or tomorrow, the special is in November.

After that, if he dies within the next 2 years, it'll be in November 2020. This I think is the most likely outcome.

If may 30th, 2020 comes and goes and McCain's still around, there won't be a special at all.

McCain should resign. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to see his wife (or preferably, daughter) get sworn in?

If he is still alive come 2020 (unlikely,) he should resign so that the seat will be on the ballot in 2020. That way, republicans will be more likely to hold it and will have an incumbent come 2022; holding an open seat in the 2022 midterms would be very difficult, as 2022 will more likely than not be blue-favored as Trump will, more likely than not, be re-elected.

We can't afford to lose another senate seat. I'm glad McCain made it past the special election deadline because if he didn't, chances are we'd be losing both Arizona senate seats at once, and our senate majority would be in real danger.

I think his daughter would be a better appointment if he wants someone to hold the seat and win in 2020

It's despicable that we are even discussing this article of extreme disrespect to a sitting senator. Enough said.

(I agree this thread is mildly ghoulish, but not because of McCain’s position, jeez.)

Quite simple, there won't be any special election and Arizona and we'll have to wait until 2022 before the next senate election in Arizona will be held.

This will be funny if McCain lives and runs for re-election in 2022.

His daughter's views are too ideosyncratic for her to be a Republican senator from Arizona other than a placeholder.

2020 will be another opportunity for Democrats to win an open seat in AZ
