Hi there,

I'm a snide 25-year old tryhard who's too clever by half and probably isn't worth listening to, but AMA if you want to, because we need more of these threads (hur hur).

Anyway...go. Tongue

I could probably find this in some old topic, but would there have been a year/decade in the distant past where you would have chosen to identify as a (presumably very liberal) Republican?  If so, what would be the cutoff, and what would have made you more comfortable being an uncomfortable bedfellow with "conservative Republicans" at that time instead of "conservative Democrats"?

Jeff Beck.

*cough* the South! *cough*

Hmm...maybe no later than WWII til, uh, the end of Eisenhower's Presidency? (Oh, that'd be the 1940s-1950s, I guess.) I could see myself supporting the internationalist pseudo-Republican Wendell Willkie* against FDR's retreat from the New Deal and the continued stranglehold held by Dixiecrat segregationists on Congress. I'd probably be a ticket-splitter after the War, voting for Truman in 1948, Eisenhower (probably?) both times and a mix of Democrats and more progressive-liberal Republicans downballot but on a candidate-by-candidate basis (it would be comparatively easy to find downballot Republican candidates that I could see myself voting for in that era, assuming that I lived in the SF Bay Area then as I do IRL Smiley ).

I would likely be a pretty solid party-line left-liberal Democrat by 1960, and certainly by 1964. Wink

*Then again, I might have supported FDR more because of Henry Wallace being on the ticket, so idk. Tongue

(edited for elaboration and some revision.)
