Democrat Senate Leader Mike Mansfield wins the nomination and taps Florida Governor Reubin Askew as his running mate. President Nixon was injured in an assasination attempt in December of 1971 and decided not to run for re-election with Vice President Sprio Agnew winning the nomination. Agnew then picks Rockefeller as his VP Candidate.
George Wallace runs for a second time and convinces Strom Thurmond to be his running mate.
