I believe there had been speculation years ago that Kim was afraid to leave North Korea because his departure could spark a coup.  I guess he's feeling more secure in his position now.

His second trip to China (last week I think) was by plane, seen as a test run. But that’s a much different distance than Singapore.

Is there is going to be an economic and government restructuring, Singapore is probably the ideal of what Kim would want.
