Because he's a weak incumbent who only barely won in 2016.

This, plus I don't think he took Harris seriously, as least as far as I could tell.

He didn't win the general in 2012 by that much either.  I think it was 51-46.

Didn't he beat Harris in the 2016 primary by just over 200 votes? And IIRC he didn't win by that much in 2014 and 2012. He was never a strong incumbent.

I’m really hoping McCready wins. He’d be an outstanding Senate candidate down the line
