Biden did well in New Mexico because of its large Hispanic population.

That's correct. Trump would have won New Mexico easily if only white voters had participated. And of course, we can't forget Native Americans-another vital component of the Democratic coalition there (and in Arizona as well).

Actually no. According to the Fox News exit polling in conjunction with the AP, Biden carried white voters in NM 49-48%. Source: https://www.foxnews.com/elections/2020/general-results/voter-analysis?state=NM

Democrats seemed to really outperform across much of the southwest (Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado... especially Colorado).  I do think something else is going on.  Probably California influence as people move out of the state.

Utah is surrounded by 4 states in the blue Sunbelt.

So the theory is that the influence of Utah makes those other 4 states vote Dem? It is like they look at Utah, and the say, "yuck, we don't want that"?

I don't think he was saying it has an influence one way or another just that it's the only holdout.  It seems to be trending blue too but not as fast and it started off so republican that it would be hard to flip for a very long time.  I could see the Salt Lake City congressional district eventually becoming a democratic district though.

He may have used Census information but this data was taken from thousands of actual voters leaving polling booths in New Mexico by Fox News, the AP, CNN, NYT, etc. The NYT also has the same information: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/11/03/us/elections/ap-polls-new-mexico.html

Hispanic voters are not a monolith. New Mexico Hispanics are so different from Rio Grande Valley Latinos.

Last time I checked, most New Mexico Hispanics live along the Rio Grande Valley.

Most Gary Johnson voters backed Biden.  Also I've heard that white voters there are far more Democratic than say Nevada for example.

Reagente based his information upon the Census and upon voter surveys of the electorate from last year, probably including some of the ones which you mention. I wouldn't be surprised if Biden got over 40% of the white vote in New Mexico, given that he did win whites in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, but I doubt he won them in the state as a whole. The only states in the American Southwest where Biden definitely won whites are California and Colorado.
