Anyone noticed the huge amount of spooks that have thrown their hat In the ring? Does this have precedent?

The side effect of the Russia investigation is that liberals, especially Democratic Party insiders, have grown more hawkish and value institutions like the CIA and the FBI. So now we see former CIA officials with the most fundraising in their primaries.

This is mostly b/c a lot of members of the Intelligence Community, State, Defense etc have left in the wake of Trump (either because they were fired, pushed out for Trump loyalists, or had their departments downsized).

Since there's only so many consulting and private sectors jobs for them, and since they have donor connections through political appointees, a lot of them probably thought "oh, the GOP congressman in the district where I used to live is vulnerable" and decided to jump in.

A lot of donors are glad to take the word of Obama, Biden, Kerry et al on these guys, and most of the big donors don't give a damn if they were in the CIA, NSA etc--any gov't experience to them is good experience.

I don't really blame them--best case scenario they win and influence policy, and maybe get good positions in their old agencies. Worst case is they drift into the private sector until 2020/24 and get their old jobs back.
