Other than that, Oakland County still votes Republican at the statewide and local level. Yes, Oakland County is a classic suburban bastion of Detroit.
But why?
It's a county essentially founded on segregation. As
L. Brooks Patterson has said, repeatedly, he thinks Detroit should drop dead and that its well-being is completely unimportant to the well-being of Oakland County. In his own words, "What we’re gonna do is turn Detroit into an Indian reservation, where we herd all the Indians into the city, build a fence around it, and then throw in the blankets and corn." Detroit is associated with Democrats; thus, Oakland County votes for Republicans, who are best seen as protecting the county from the "undesirables" of Detroit.
