It's over for the DFL. Many Minnesotans have great memories of T-Paw and will happily vote for him. Say goodbye to MN-01 and MN-08 while we're at it. Blue wave is officially dead in this state.

Running retreads generally don’t work in years like these...

You’re all conveniently forgetting that he won in 2006 when Minnesota was more blue.
Where he still only barely won and didn't embarrass himself as a Washington SWAMP LOBBYIST.

Trumpists aren't going to come out for him.

1. He was the incumbent
2. He only won in 2002 due to an independent candidate getting 17% of the vote

Tossup.

I like Tim Pawlenty. He's one of my favorite politicians. He has working class appeal, and yes, even if he is a lobbyist, the Sam's Club image is still there for him.

If he wins, he could be a potential VP choice again post-Trump.

Safe and steady...

LOL. Just LOL.

The best part of this is the mention of MN-08, which Pawlenty never won and where he was always notably unpopular.

The real atlas question is: who’s the stronger recruit, Pawlenty or Bredesden? (Discuss with maps)

Edit: darn, Limo beat me to it.

Pawlenty

Trump almost won Minnesota. Clinton didn't come close in Tennessee.

However, I can see a scenario where both Pawlenty and Bredesden win in November.

Ummm, the strength of a recruit is not dependent on how democratic their state is.

This. Just because Pawlenty has an easier path to victory doesn't make him better.

Anyway Pawlenty has never been popular in rural Minnesota aside from the strongest GOP areas. If the Republicans want to "double down" on Trump's map he's about the worst possible candidate to run.

Holy cow can I not wait to see all of the blue on this county-level map in November. Pawlenty is a joke and if other candidates bow out because they are afraid of him it means that the Rs are going to lose this race no matter who they run.

Pawlenty is going to get absolutely wasted, and its baffling that pundits are rating this as a tossup. For starters, there doesn't appear to be any strong third party challengers this year, which was critical to Pawlenty's former wins. Second, Pawlenty ran strong in the Twin City suburbs, but with Trump as the president, the Twin City burbs are going to be swinging hard to the DFL. Third, Pawlenty has the DC lobbyist stench on him now, so the usual trope of a provincial conservative leveraging rural resentments over corrupt political insiders and cosmopolitan liberals won't work here. Not that Pawlenty was ever particularly strong in Minnesota's rural areas. This could easily become the most lopsided win in a Minnesota gubernatorial race since Arne Carlson '94 in favor of DFL.

Pawlenty would get crushed by any of the DFL candidates, but Walz in particular would slice him up like Swiss cheese. Walz represented a district that was heavily rural/small town, so he could easily bury him both in the Twin Cities metro and outstate. I can't wait to see what the county map is going to look like on this one if it's a Walz vs. Pawlenty matchup.

It's fairly hackish that Kondik keeps TN-Sen at Likely R even as the highly popular former democratic governor who won every county is polling ahead, but immediately moves MN-Gov to tossup as the unpopular former republican governor who never got a majority enters.
