I've heard every aspect of American culture attributed to the Puritans. American exceptionalists celebrate the Puritans as the birth of religious toleration while America's critics demonize them as people who wanted to return to the Middle Ages and as the origin of all sexual repression. Are they really so influential on modern-day America?
