I've seen a narrative developing that Nelson will ride Gillum's coattails but where are people getting this from? Is it just because Gillum has a bigger lead in the polling of his race?

Not sure, but perhaps because Gillum can turn out voters who wouldn't turn out for Nelson, so the electorate Gillum turns out will boost Nelson?

 Nelson got more votes than Obama in 2012. He was running against an underwhelming candidate named Connie Mack but still.

 I think Nelson benefits from Gillum's turnout but not necessarily the other way around. I also think there are still some working class and former Democrat white voters who will support Nelson but not Gillum. Nelson even won Brevard(a home county) in 2012 where all other Dems got thrashed.

It seems Nelson has mostly caught up with Gillum's polling lead at this point - some polls even have him doing better. Still, I'd say Gillum helps Nelson more than the other way around, since he drives turnout more.

Definitely margin-wise Gillum will probably do better, as (like you said) that's what the polls have been showing due to Scott voters seemingly not being thrilled with DeSantis. 

As for total votes, I think in the end Gillum may just narrowly pull it out.  The rumors from some that there are a notable number of Gillum-Scott voters shows that Gillum may very well surpass Nelson despite Nelson's usual success in outrunning other gubernatorial or presidential Democrats on the ballot.

65+ year old whites (easily 90% of Jimmy Buffett's fan base) are not exactly the demographic that Gillum needs to crank up turnout with.
