Virginia senator Mark Warner wins the Democratic primary after a hard fought battle with John Edwards, while former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney upsets John McCain in the GOP primary. Who do they pick as their running mates, and what does the map look like?

Fmr. Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) / Fmr. Governor Mike Huckabee (R-AR)
Fmr. Governor Mark Warner (D-VA) / Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN) ✓

Huckabee would be carrying Romney in the South.

Warner's somewhat weaker than Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton, but at the same time, Mitt Romney is probably the last person possible that Republicans should be running in the middle of a financial crisis (except maybe for Mike Bloomberg).

Mark Warner/Hillary Clinton 57%
Mitt Romney/Kay Bailey Hutchison 41%

Mark Warner would defeat Mitt Romney but it would be a little closer. Warner would cause a lot of enthusiasm in the Democratic Party, but much less with black and minority voters compared to Obama. He'd win many of the key swing states, but would narrowly lose Indiana and Florida, as well as Missouri and Montana, and other close states.
