I find it strange Cruz mocks people's names while people mock him by calling him Lyin' Ted.

Indeed, it's going to backfire and bite him. No wonder that he's running as Lyin' Ted like people call him. L-Y-I-N'. Not Ted Cruz, not Rafael Cruz, but Lyin' Ted. He holds the Bible high, he puts it down and then he lies.

Why is he even bothering? If last night proved anything it's that O'Rourke has made no impact on the public consciousness.

lol

The guy got <65% against two candidates who celebrated even getting on the ballot. Check out Hernandez's and Kimbrough's respective websites if you really want to laugh.

https://www.edwardkimbroughforussenate.com/

https://www.semafortexas.us/

Ted Cruz is doing nothing but elevating a weak opponent.

Kimbrough's website is very detailed. Why would I laugh at it?

But out of the three he’s by far the strongest, he’s outraised Ted and he’s ran a pretty decent campaign so far, so it’s stupid to say he’s a weak opponent

All three seem like excellent candidates.

I think most of Hernandez’s vote was based on her name alone.

Absolutely a dumb move and likely completely unneeded as part of his reelection campaign....

Still, within Texas elections having a Latino last name will typically add a few points to a candidates margins, especially within some of the larger Metro Areas/ Counties that account for a significant chunk of Texas voters....

Working Class Latinos in Tejas typically tend to vote roughly 80/20 D at the Presidential level, but Middle-Class Latinos are not only over represented among the voting Community, but also have in recent years tended to be closer to 55-45 D, after having been a slightly leaning or tossup population only a few years before....

How many Latino candidates in Texas over the decades have seen their family names mocked for political gain while Anglo Politicians of both parties have maintained political and economic control of Texas?

If anything this "mocking of names" schtick indicates that Cruz is a bit sensitive and concerned about his reelection win/margins and wants to set up the narrative within segments of the community that this is an Anglo vs Latino election....

Whatever... tons of unknowns and new Millennial voters entering the voting booth/ turnout Texas '18 / suburban swings.... why not throw a few chips in the pot on what is essentially a Freebie bet where the Dem candidate is short stacked and running as the underdog, to hedge a bet against the unknowns?

As a side note, the ad song itself is stuck in my head. I suppose that's effective.

Hey now, effective advertising is effective advertising. Everyone knows Geico and JG Wentworth and name recognition is a big thing in politics.

I liked the ad song to.

It is strange.  I have hated Cruz since he came on the scene,  but I am warming to him. I guess it is circle the wagons time.

There is a difference between using nicknames Beto and Ted in this case.  O’Rourke is trying to be something he is not: a Latino.  Cruz is trying to be something he is: an American.

By using Beto, O’Rourke seems actually to be dissing his Irish heritage rather than affirming his American status. He attempts to become Latino/Irish. Cruz affirms his American status by using Ted, following  the lead of millions of immigrants and their children. He becomes a Cuban American.

Millions of immigrants have anglized their names.  Not many have attempted to appropriate another immigrant heritage on to thier own.  That new concept of appropriation can come back and bite.
